Too late

I'm drifting away,
Trying to sleep.
Maybe a dream
Would give me relief.

But every time
I close my eyes,
Those same damn scenes
Run in my mind.

Either I'm falling
Or running away
Not knowing why
Not knowing where.

Sometimes, I'd wake up,
still in a dream.
Thousands of bugs
Meet me with a grin.

Now is different.
My story's torn.
Hundreds of books
Lying on their own.

I picked one up,
It simple said:
It's not too late
To make amends.

But every time
I'd make it right,
One part of me
Would fall apart.

I'd help a woman
I hurt back then
And all I got
Were cuts on my hand.

I still kept thinking
Something's there for me
This can't be the way
Life is going to be.

In that moment
My eyes went wide,
I saw my bed
And book by my side.

I tried getting up,
But instead of leg,
My whole being
just reached the land.

And then I realized
There's nothing there,
Not even an arm,
Not even my head.

So as my sight
started to fade
I saw the words
Forming on the page.

Ink was darker
And simple said:
Life don't quite
Work that way.

I couldn't see,
I couldn't hear,
I couldn't touch
And couldn't leave.

But I felt it,
Someone was there.
My soul was warm.
My mind was sad.

He tried to reach
inside my shell
To catch the nothing
That I became.

And the last thing
I could somehow feel
Was his only thought
Running to me:

Oh, I'm so sorry
That I can see
He got to you
before I did.
