This is off my usual subject matter, but is about laws and rules. In the cold parts of the North American Continent many people heat their homes with oil, or propane. Single family homes and business not connected to natural gas, or with no electric heat will have a furnace that runs on these fuels.
Fuel gets to the places by truck and of course a truck driver and fuel delivery person. Most oil and propane companies hire additional drivers in the winter to service their customers as fuel usage is higher. I have 20+ winters of experience with this and want to tell you YOUR rights as a seasonal driver. This is for those considering this and hope it helps you.
For all fuel companies the winter is GO time and many companies think that they can skirt both labor laws and DOT (Department of Transportation) rules, and basically treat their drivers like crap. Don't let this happen to you.
You have a right to breaks and a lunch in most places, Check your state laws regarding this. Take your lunch and breaks.
Keep track of your hours. You will likely be working for an hourly rate. Make sure that the employer pays you for the hours that you worked. Don't let them "clip" your hours. Let them know on day one that you can do math and that you keep track of your hours.
ON CALL. Most companies delegate too much authority to their dispatcher. The dispatcher will probably stick the new guy (this is you), with Christmas ON CALL. Don't let the DBAG do this to you. It is best to negotiate upon hiring. Tell them you won't work it and to give any holiday on call to their full time drivers. Unless of course you want to work holidays. Dumping holiday on call on you at the last minute is also a common and dirty trick. Tell them where to put it.
Don't let them bully or threaten you. If this is happening use your phone or other device to record the behavior. Hire a lawyer and sue them. Quite seriously.
DOT rules and regulations apply nation wide. As a fuel driver you will also be a HAZMAT driver. Hazardous Materials. This requires a back ground check. Last time that I got my HAZMAT certification they had a finger print scanner that sent prints directly to the STATE DEPARTMENT.
Please familiarize yourself with the HOURS of SERVICE rules. The company can require you to work up to 14 hours a day. NO MORE. Contrary to what most dispatchers seem to think they cannot make you work 16 hours a day one day a week. You also are required by DOT rules to 10 HOURS off between shifts. Do not break these rules, don't let the employer run you into the ground. It is YOUR Commercial License, not the companies.
Do Not drive a truck that is not in good working order. Tell them to fix it. If no other truck is available for you to drive, tell them to call you when your truck is fixed.
