I looked through the forums for something similar but couldn’t find anything, so I decided to write a guide myself. This isn’t a guide on how not to get mugged, that’s part of the game, so there’s no way to avoid it. This guide’s aim is to help you keep mugs to a minimum where possible and when you are mugged, to reduce your losses.
The reasons you’re mugged are usually one of the following:
Random: You’re just unlucky, your profile appears somewhere in the hall of fame for example and a mugger will target you at random.
Indiscretion: Mouthing off in global/trade/travel chat. Torn is a crime game and much like in real life, it’s people bragging that often gets them in trouble. There’s a simple fix for this: keep your mouth shut.
Buy mugging. This is when you trade with a player or sell items in the item market or your bazaar and the buyer attacks you shortly afterwards. Always check the forums before setting up a new trade. If they have a good reputation, they should have lots of good feedback from customers. If you’re unsure, you can ask them to link it to you. Further on, I’ll give some suggestions on how to hide your money so if you are caught out, you minimise your loss.
Travel to the Cayman islands/South Africa/UAE. Of course there’s a risk you’ll get mugged in the other countries, but these are countries you might be taking a large sum of money to buy high value items or deposit in the bank, so these places are always risky for mugging. Set alarms for your arrival and keep your time there at a minimum. Torn is always safer because if you get hospitalised there, you’re likely to be able to get yourself out with a medkit or drugs, abroad you’ll have to rely on someone to revive you, who can be expensive, or wait it out until you heal up.
Big casino wins. The mug itself is unavoidable, but again, when you leave the table, have a plan to stash the cash. Russian roulette can also find you getting mugged by an annoyed loser.
You might be on a mugger’s target list because they have hit you for large sums in the past. Follow the rest of the guide to reduce your cash on hand and hopefully become a less desirable target.
One principle I live by is to never have more that 15% of what I need as money in hand. Everything else gets stored or spent. I’ll give an example. Say I have 10 million in hand and I want to buy panda plushies from China. First, I travel to the Cayman islands and head straight to the bank, deposit everything except what I need for plushies in China + 15%, travel back to torn and then to China. If you do this quickly enough and stick to any alarms you’ve set, you should avoid mugging in the Caymans. If you’re not quick enough, you should at least be able to deposit everything before you get mugged and so don’t lose anything but time. The extra 15% is a mugging buffer, should the worst happen and you get mugged again in China, in my experience, that’s around how much you’ll usually lose. So once you recover, you’ll still be able to buy what you went there for.
If travel isn’t an option, you do have other choices. I would avoid bank investments as you can’t touch them for at least a week. But depending on how much cash you have, you can use it to buy things (you can only be mugged for cash after all, not items), buy shares (when doing this to protect myself from a buy mugger, I test buy 1 share to make sure there are shares available before setting trade. It’s also a good idea to have a wide portfolio if you’re using the stock exchange to hide your money. The eventual stock benefits are nice too!), put it in the faction bank (make sure you are able to trust the people with access), or head to the casino and sit at a poker table put everything into the table and it moves from your cash in hand, again reducing how much you can be mugged for; rent or buy a property with a vault and save your cash there. I have seen the suggestion that you should self hospitalise to protect your money, or you can pay for mug protection, but I prefer to make them use e and waste their time getting very little from me. At any one time, I try to keep around 1k to 15k cash on hand, any more gets hidden immediately.
Finally, a couple of suggestions to minimise your losses when travelling to the expensive countries. These measures are a little extreme, so might not be practical for everyone, but I wanted to mention them anyway. Again using an example; buying Xanax. Give the money you intend to spend to a trusted friend or put it in the faction bank. Then travel to SA with zero cash on hand. Set an alarm for your arrival, make sure the friend/people with faction bank access are on at the same time. If there are Xanax available, get them to send you enough money to buy as many as you can carry then hurry back to torn. If there are no Xanax, there’s no monetary risk in waiting for it to refresh and you can enjoy some hunting until you’re attacked or they refresh, whichever happens first.
Another option, if your timing is off or you can’t get the cash sent when you need it, is to sit idle in SA (or any other country) for 24 hours. After staying inactive for 24 hours, you can’t be attacked overseas. So you could just log out for a day and then coordinate at your convenience to buy.
I hope this guide helps somewhat and if it doesn’t please don’t be too cruel. I’m a sensitive little flower!

Not to sound like a boomer, but Unique is polite and honest, which goes a long way for me. His prices are good too and mug free trades are always a good thing. Highly recommended trader
