I've been in the IT industry for 20+ years. My main unit has always been an HP EliteBook 850 series. It's more of a business grade as far as price (avg USD$1200+) Solid and well built. I do recommend at least Intel i5 CPU, 8-16 GB RAM and a SSD. The SSD makes a huge difference. I run an I7, 16GB RAM and 2 SSDs (256GB, 1TB). For my python programming and machine learning models, it's great. Oh and I dropped Windows 10 and moved it primarily to Linux about 2 years ago. Never looked back.
I bought an ASUS RoG unit 4 years ago but the latest Win10 1803 update killed it (no more firmware updates) so it's running Linux now and my kids use it for Steam. It's still a solid unit, but very heavy for a laptop.
On the other end, I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon running Win10. It's crazy light and packs some power. My biggest caveat is that SSD. It's not (easily) upgradable so 120GB is all you get.
Bottom line, get the best of what you can afford. Getting "just enough" won't last long.
