Why do you play this game? · · 44 likes

So, I recently watched a video about Bartle's Taxonomy on the channel Extra Credits. If you don't know what Bartle's Taxonomy is, let me break it down for you.

When designing a game, developers usually implement features to cater to the audience. This theory organizes what the audience is looking for in a game, which are: Achievers, Explorers, Socializers, and Killers. While these names are pretty self-explanatory, the descriptions are much deeper.

Achievers: Players who play largely for the stated, in game goals. To beat a level, to get a high score, to win the game, to max out their XP, or to collect the most currency. To encourage these types of players, designers create goals that are above and beyond what we expect the ordinary player to do. Things like a 100% completion mode, and achievements are designed to feed the needs of these particular players. They feel rewarded by anything that acknowledges their mastery of the game.

How this relates to Torn: Features like these are quite evident in this game. The entire award/merit system, and the education system are the most significant examples, with some achievements taking literally years to complete, such as the new Honor, Whiz Kid, for completing 100 educations, with even some of the long-term players haven't accomplished yet. The Hall of Fame is another, with lists of the best of the best put up for people to envy.

Explorers: Players who are out for discovery, for the joy of the new. Whether its understanding how aspects of a game system work, or finding places that no-one else has gotten to yet, that's why the explorer plays. The actual gameplay is just a tool to enable their exploration. They're not here to master the game, they simply want to garner enough skill at it to be able to explore unimpeded. Easter eggs, hidden areas, layered systems or large amounts of non-aethstetic customization, these are the factors that draw explorers to a game.

How this relates to Torn: While I feel like this might be the weakest aspect of the game, in terms of pure complexity to a system, this game really lives up to it. New players often require many, many guides, with tutorials for many layers, which Helpers guide along. And though I feel as if its complexity might put off new players at first, it really starts to drag you in, researching and analyzing the entire enigma that is the Torn Market, wondering why lollipops in the market cost way above what they really should be in real life. And if you just want to "explore unimpeded," you are certainly free to do so. As long as you keep your head down and out of conlicts, you should be passed off unnoticed.

Socializers: Players who like the interpersonal aspect of a game, they're there for the community. You'll find these players trading, chatting in town, forming factions, or helping new players just for the fun of meeting a new person.

How this relates to Torn: This is certainly one of the biggest, if not the biggest aspects of this game. This forum that I'm posting on is a clear example, with many, many, different subjects related and not related to Torn, discussing and debating over recent events both in game and out. The faction system is another, with certain factions dedicated to a part of the game, such as healing, attacking, or supporting. Discord is another platform where players can socialize, with tips and lottos spreading around. There are many different types of chat as well, such as New Player Chat, which is the "helping new players just for the fund of meeting a new person" part, Trade Chat, Global Chat, Faction Chat, and Company Chat, as well as being able to strike up a conversation with whoever you please.

Killers: These are the players who are in game to assert dominance, pure and simple. Most of the time this takes the form of causing misery to other players, knowing someone on the other side of the screen is cursing in defeat is the highest thrill for most killers. This can take other forms though, such as the guild leader who runs this town, the trader who corners the market on a good so everybody who wants has to go through them. These too can be the killer player types, they're just playing parts of the game that don't actually involve killing. The more that PvP allows for an expression of dominance, the more these players enjoy it. That may include the ablity to pick on the weak, or any game system that allows them to taunt their prey.

How this relates to Torn: Also a big important part of this game. The ability to bounty and mug shows this fact, and attacking whoever they very well please, except for the 14 day grace period for newbies, lets these people feel a sense of dominance over the week. Trading monopolies are also here, and if you have the money to fund it, you could put a decent blockade on almost everything that local stores don't sell.

Personally, I feel as if I'm a mix of a Socializer and a Explorer. Helping out people and researching is what I enjoy most.
What do you think you are, and why?

TL:DR: Why do you play this game? To be the best, to explore, to socialize, or to assert dominance?

A single life is best for you
Please don't start anew
I need to win a bet
So I can make some profit
There's a Box of Grenades on the line
Decline all incoming valentines
I need you to break this divorcing habit
So I can win a Neumune Tablet
This is a rigged bachelorette
You'll probably be matched with someone you've never met
In any case, you know already that this is insanity
Suitors are known for their vanity

P.S:
Please, at the very least
Stay single for 2 weeks

when elimination teams should have only one thread per team but everybody starts making about random ones anyways

hey that's illegal

I have to wonder, would your response still be the same if you were on Lumberjacks right now?

I saw a whole lot of appreciation and cheering for when the potluck system was first introduced.

Now that teams are dropping, that reaction has made quite a U-turn.

Nope. Your "punishment" for winning is to sit and wait for those 25 lives to go down. I know it's sooooo hard to deal with, but suck it up.

Getting the victory you want is long past due.

Great point you're making here - we also have a reserve currency as well if we ever hit hyperinflation: points. The max price of each point is $100,000, so if there ever is too much money in circulation, we can just all switch to points so that the most a Torn dollar would be worth would be a 1/100000 of a point. Chedburn was brilliant when making this economy, as it directly reflects real world transactions. Might make a seperate thread about it, but what I'm trying to address here is that points are our backup currency if inflation gets out of control.

Alright that's your one and only Elimination team thread - at least you got it done over quickly, about "roughly 29 hours" quickly
No more congratulatory threads for you lumberjacks

What a waste of a good thread... could've been used to make some nice flannel lumberjack shirts...

The thing about mice... ·

Mice are breeding machines. They have a gestating period of 19 to 21 days. A female mouse gets pregnant about 5 to 10 times each year and can give birth to a litter of 3 to 14 pups. ... The mice reproduce each year, and the mother can mate immediately after giving birth.

Jumping the shark is the moment when something that was once popular that no longer warrants the attention it previously received makes an attempt at publicity, which only serves to highlight its irrelevance. This is especially applicable to television series or other entertainment outlets.
