tbh from my own experience all I do is mix charcoal, decaffeinated coffee grounds, and dead organic materials (fruit and leaves) to make a mix to put in my soil. also just a small digression, if you're ever worried about mold or anything, add cinnamon to the soil. using the mix above, my plants turn out pretty well after sprouting (btw where I live is really cold during fall and winter so botany is a lot harder for me lol)
