Torn Drugs vs Real Life Drugs
It's only cool until the drug influence is over
As I was told, this wasn't for the newspaper, but I still wanted to share my research and thus here it is.
Would you like to know the differences in the drugs you take in Torn as opposed to the drug in real life? Well I did some Googling and wanted to share my findings with everyone. They're listed as they are in the wiki, Torn effects are just listed as they are, while the information I gathered is below.
Cannabis
What it does in Torn: Increased crime success rate. Gain 2-3 nerve. -20% Strength, -25% Defense, -35% Speed
What it does IRL: Cannabis is also known as marijuana and is a psychoactive drug for medical and recreational purposes. The immediate desired effects include relaxation and general euphoria. Having been grown and smoked 2500 years ago, it's the 2nd oldest in this list(it's also the icon that's being used in the drug tab).
Adverse effects include decrease in short term memory, impaired motor skills and psychosis.
Ecstasy
What it does in Torn: Doubles Happy (usually used just before a happy jump)
What it does IRL: Ecstasy is also known as 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine with the name being too long and the name Molly that's shared with a cloned sheep, was developed in 1912 by a German pharmaceutical and was popular as a street drug in the 1980s. It's effects include
Undesired effects are memory problems, paranoia, insomnia, blurred vision, among others. Ecstasy is most associated with dance parties and EDM due to sensory effects of music and lighting.
Ketamine
What it does in Torn: +50% Defense, -20% Strength and Speed
What it does IRL: Ketamine is a recreational drug that causes a trance-like state, providing pain relief and memory loss. In countries other than Torn, it's used for sedation and treatment of chronic pain and depression.
Discovered in 1962, it's side effects include confusion and hallucination. It also hurts when you pee a little.

LSD
What it does in Torn: +30% Strength, +50% Defense, -30% Speed and Dexterity, +50 Energy, +200~500 Happy, +5 Nerve (the go to for SSL gym users)
What it does IRL: Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) is a recreational drug commonly known as acid, and was popular in the 1960s to 1980s. It was created in 1938 from a fungus. In the 1950s it was once used by the CIA in a mind control project MKUltra on people without their knowledge.
Contrary to belief, LSD doesn't seem to be addictive, but gives sense of anxiety, paranoia and delusions.
Opium
What it does in Torn: Removes all hospital time. Replenish 66.6% Life. +50~100 Happy
What it does IRL: Opium dates back to 5000 BCE and is a potent pain relief drug, allowing surgeons to perform surgical procedures for prolonged periods of time. It's medicinal effects include
In popular asian culture, stories talk of the Opium Wars between China and Britain in 1839 and 1857. Unlike in Torn City, Opium is addictive with users possibly being more depressed when they would get used to being high.
Opium is also a material in the manufacturing of morphine and heroin. It's largest manufacturer is India.
PCP
What it does in Torn: +20% Strength and Dexterity, 250 Happy
What it does IRL: Phencyclidine (PCP) is also known as angel dust, a recreational drug in the 1960s that can cause hallucinating, distorted perception of sounds and violence. It can also cause seizures and people to go into a coma. It was made in 1926 and typically sprayed on leafy material like cannabis before being smoked.
Shrooms
What it does in Torn: +500 Happy, -20% to all Fighting Stats, -25 energy (I'm working on taking 50 of each drug so I'll use up all my energy before taking this to sort of 'cheat' on the effects)
What it does IRL: Shrooms are also known as magic mushrooms, which in popular comedic culture, makes you see unicorns. Once again, it's origins date back thousands of years ago, but was first known in 1955 for indigenous ceremonies in Mexico. Effects include paranoia, hallucinations and psychosis. It's core chemical, Psilocybin, is not addictive but users may experience depression when they stop using the drug.
Speed
What it does in Torn: -20% Dexterity, +50% Speed, +50 Happy
What it does IRL: The chemical name for Speed is Amphetamine, and this recreational drug was discovered in 1887 by a chemist in Germany. Similar to it's nickname, in small doses, Speed can improve reaction time, muscle strength and fatigue resistance. Undesirable effects include impaired cognitive function and rapid muscle breakdown, and even delusions and paranoia.
Vicodin
What it does in Torn: +25% All Fighting Stats, +75 Happy (my go-to for Duke Missions)
What it does IRL: This was interesting for me as the term paracetamol came up and I'm quite sure that's a painkiller.Vicodin is known as hydrocodone/acetaminophen and is used to treat severe pain. Side effects include dizziness, sleepiness, constipation and vomiting. Serious undesirable effects include liver and kidney failure, decreased rate of breathing and allergic effects. Professional Golfer Tiger Woods was arrested in May 2017 for driving under influence, with one of the four prescription drugs taken at that time being Vicodin.
In popular culture, this drug was mentioned in a bunch of songs, such as from Eminem, Blackbear and Kendrick Lamar.
Xanax
What it does in Torn: +250 Energy, +75 Happy, -35% All Fighting Stats
What it does IRL: Our 2nd most valued drug in the list is Xanax or Alprazolam, being a psychoactive drug patented in 1971 and approved for medical use in 1981. It is used in short term management of anxiety disorders such as panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Overdose can lead to dizziness, hypoventilation, muscle weakness, coma or death. Similar to Torn City, Xanax is a common drug for abuse as a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US. Singer/composer Billie Ellish mentioned this in her song 'Xanny' in 2019.
These oval shaped pills are currently worth $3,000 or $836,000 depending on the label on it.
