I work with individuals in vocational rehabilitation; a handful can be fairly violent. For privacy and dignity reasons, some details of this story are altered.
At this time last year, I had a few people I worked with on a regular basis. The one I worked with the most was Cara Jean. She was very young and just graduated high school. She could be incredibly adorable and because of the looks of her congenital disability, many thought she was more angel than human. However, Cara Jean was incredibly self centered and found life more interesting when others around her were upset. Life was best when it most resembled an episode of Big Brother. For example, her best friend and best friend’s boyfriend both suffered family losses in the same month. When the boyfriend wanted to dance with his girl at a Christmas party, Cara Jean refused to let go of her and the boyfriend isolated himself in a janitorial closet. When I tried to reunite the two, Cara Jean insisted on coming along and ran away crying when the two others needed me to counsel. That’s Cara Jean. Cara Jean did do better when she had her stress ball - I had painted it a soft pink and glued on purple rhinestones. Once a week, we calmly reglued any fallen stones and touched up the paint while listening to Backstreet Boys. It was the most genuine day Cara Jean had every week.
I also worked with Edgar. Edgar was just as selfish and attention seeking as Cara Jean but with a rap sheet of assault. He was gigantic in every way, from his stature to his voice to his fists. After ripping his home assistants arm from her socket, I was one of the few with enough confidence to soothe him through his 3 hour work shift. He was going through charges at the time and everyone was fairly certain he wouldn’t withhold probation terms, including him.
Cara Jean and Edgar did not like sharing my attention. I tried to convince Cara Jean to work with someone else during Edgar’s shifts but she would run from her worker and stay with me regardless. I scolded her time and time again to not growl at Edgar anytime he was loud; many of us would get him laughing to keep him from exploding in random anger. She didn’t listen. She was a board members daughter and my supervisor wouldn’t risk her telling her mother she didn’t get what she wanted. (Btw, her mother never insisted we do whatever Cara Jean wanted; but what did I know).
So the week after the Christmas party, I have the two stringing beads for jewelry. The only other job was packing screwdrivers - that’s a big nope. We had really food jewelry supplies: wooden and gemstone beads; string that was clear, strong and a little stretchy. An argument came up over what music was played next, despite me having carefully made a playlist of the twos favorites. Edgar grabbed the tray of beads and flung it to the floor - a disastrous scenario when many of our employees used crutches, walkers or would soon use either. I knelt to the floor and was followed by colleagues to clean them up, halting others because we knew just as many people didn’t have the vision to see the beads.
I never heard Cara Jean scream. I was told Edgar immediately stood up with string in hand and jerked it around her neck, pulling her into his stomach. A crescendo of gasps and exclamations circled around me until I looked up to see Cara Jeans reddened eyes bulging from her sockets.
Even if APS would have allowed me to manhandle Edgar, he would be too strong. All I could do was stand and curl my fingers around the string beside his fists, jerking back as the last pin prick of sensation left.
Cara Jean recovered in the hospital just fine and Edgar disappeared to a local institution. A few days later on Christmas Eve, I received a package from that institution. Inside was the pink stress ball, barely recognizable from heavy rubbing and indents where each rhinestone once was.

I’m eager to earn money and want to sell a Diamond Plated Knife but I need 19 more credits towards missions. It also is on a Special Offer and I’m not sure how long I have on that, but 800,000 can buy a lot of stock! I just wasted most of my energy on sending just the right junk from the dump to some jerk; but I can taste that money.
