Just to expand on the idea a little...
Rather than a choice to take a second xanax, it could be an event based on chance (much like the OD).
I.e "you popped a xanax, but felt like you could take more. You gained 500 energy"
Although would only trigger when you have more than one Xan in your items. And your energy is <500 as not to surpass the 1000 cap.
Could be a different way of implementing the same mechanic :)
