Part One: THE BASICS
In the City of Torn each player is equipped with energy, nerve, happiness, and life. Energy is used to do a lot of useful things in the game like train, and attack. It is important to note that as a beginner you are limited to 100 energy as opposed to 150 energy that donators receive. Nerve is used to do crimes, and bust people out of jail. Think of happiness as a multiplier for battle statistics gained through training.
Energy:
You can use energy in many ways but most importantly you can use it for battle statistic gains. You can gain battle statistics by training at the gym. Note energy usage at the gym goes in increments of 5, 10, and 25. As you begin to train more you will unlock and be able to activate more gyms as you progress. Another usage is of course attacking. There are 3 forms of attacks: leave, mug, hospitalize. The largest experience gain will come from leaving, while hospitalization gives the very least. Note that when you mug you also can steal a small percentage of cash on your enemies hand. Most new players will find themselves eager to participate in attacking, but be careful as this can create as what I like to call empty experience. Empty experience can cause a player to have a higher level but low stats, which can sometimes make them a target themselves.
Energy can be replenished by non-donators at a rate of 5 energy per 15 minutes, and donators at a rate of 5 energy per 10 minutes. There are items that can replenish energy, and as they tend to be costly it is wise to note of their existence as you grow stronger/richer in the game. Energy drinks give small energy boosts of 20-30 energy per can. Refilling energy with points and Feathery Hotel Coupons will completely replenish your energy bar (100 energy or 150 energy depending on your donator status). Taking Xanax will increase your energy by 250.
Nerve:
The most essential component to completing crimes, nerve. Your nerve bar starts out at 10 but can be maxed out to 60. You can replenish your nerve through items such as alcohol. It is definitely the first source of income you run into in the city, but by no means should it ever become your only means. Some crimes are more difficult than others and it is important to understand that you should never be mistaken to do crimes in the order that they go. There are some crimes you may even neglect doing as they can severely damage your crime experience. Here is a list of crimes that will always pass or nearly never fail:
Natural Nerve Bar | Crime | Outcome |
15 | 2 Nerve - Search movie Theater | 11$-18$ |
15 | 3 Nerve - Action DVD | 10$-17$ |
15-20 | Shoplift - Clothes Shop - Jacket | Jacket |
15-20 | Pickpocket - Hobo | 20$-40$ |
15-20 | Pickpocket - Kid | 40$-70$ |
15-20 | Pickpocket - Old Lady | 60$-90$ |
15-20 | Pickpocket - Businessman | 70$-160$ |
15-20 | Pickpocket - Loan Shark | 120$-150$ |
20 | Armed Robbery - Thorough Robbery | 200$-400$ |
25 | Plant A Computer Virus - Stealth Virus | 1,000$-5,000$ |
30-40 | Arson - Warehouse | 6,000$-15,000$ |
40-60 | Assassination - Mob Boss | 800$-12,000$ |
40-60 | GTA - Steal a Parked Car | 5,500$-32,000$ |
40-60 | Kidnapping - Kidnap the Mayor | 60,000$-100,000$ |
| o = safe o =rare fails |
* Surely you can find more in depth guides but this should give you a brief idea of which crimes to do *
EX: Nash's Guide
Nerve is also used for busting people out of jail. This isn't really something you can use to generate income, but I'm sure sometimes you might be able to garner "tips" from doing so. Busting is mostly useful for merits, and can supplement your crime experience. It tends to be rule of thumb to never bust someone of a much higher level than you, or bust people in repetitive succession/multiple times.
Happiness:
As mentioned earlier in this chapter happiness is a sort of multiplier to your battle statistic gains per train. Basically the higher your happiness the more battle statistics you will get from each train. You can increase your base happiness through renting, or buying better properties. You can upgrade properties, and hire staff to also increase your happiness base. You may also temporarily increase your happiness through items such as candy, Erotic DVDs, and drugs such as Ecstasy.
Life:
Essentially life is the measure of how much damage you can take in battle. You start with 500 life but with each level up you should see an increase. You can also increase the base amount of your life through merits. You can replenish your life through medical items such as small first aid kits, first aid kits, morphine and blood bags. You can fill blood bags with your blood type by completing the Intravenous Therapy in the Education program under Biology. I highly recommend learning this ability as soon as possible. For low levels this can be an inexpensive fix for medical items, and a small source of income if you wish.

Part Two: MONEY
Money... whether you're living in the real world or Torn City money is the driving force of your personal world. It's the fine line between success and misfortune. Some people wander around the city for months, or even years never fully grasping how to make money. However, a lot has changed since the city first opened it's doors. It's almost as if they are throwing the money at you. Maybe you will find your own way to muster up a fat wallet, but this list should get you well acquainted with some forms of money making practices.
Blood Bags:
Some people like to sell off blood bags as we went over in the the Life section of this guide. It can definitely be a reliable source of income as you get your roots in the city.
Slutting:
Now I know what you're thinking, but it's not at all what it looks like! In Torn slutting is the act of one player losing to another player. You will gain substantial amounts of money for doing this around 200-350k per attack. You can peruse the attacking forum and find a thread that looks legitimate. You can usually tell if the thread has a high karma rating, there are good reviews, and you can even safe guard yourself to a small extent by attacking only once and continuing if you receive payment. Be wary of offers over 350k. My observance is that players offering ridiculously high amounts for your loss don't tend to pay out and use this as a lure.
Scamming:
As you may or may not know scamming is legal in the city. A well known scam is pulling a bait and switch in trades. EX: Buying a Skateboard only to find out... You've bought a Snowboard.
(NOTE: If you know of a scamming tutorial thread I could direct new users to please send me a mail!)

Buy Mugging:
While this is not easy for low levels it can be an easy way to acquire expensive items cheap with little effort. You will need a good amount of money and high stats for this to be a good source of profit. Buy mugging is the act of a purchaser buying (usually in bulk) items for millions of dollars and immediately mugging the seller. It is important to note this will not make you popular among Torn. You can also prevent buy mugging by black listing people known for doing so. This will prevent them from buying in your bazaar.
Dmoneygetta's Buy Mugger Thread / The Buy Mugger's Guide to Torn City
Bazaars:
Think of a bazaar as your own store that you can add items and edit their prices in bulk. It costs 250 points in the point shop to create your own bazaar. It is important to note that as a lower level you could be target to buy mugging.
Trading:
You can find reputable traders in the Trading Post to sell items (preferably in bulk). Typically players will slightly undercut the prices in the item market, and while this sounds like a raw deal you're avoiding (if the trader is reputable) buy muggings as well as item market taxes.
The Beginners' Trading Guide by YNMK
Mugging:
As mentioned earlier you can mug in the city. It takes a small percentage of players cash on hand in exchange for 25 energy.
YNMK's Mugging Guide
Searching the Dump:
You can search for items in the city dump and sell on the item market. It is very important to note that this way of acquiring money is very wasteful as you have to use energy and usually you don't find items worth very much.
Graphics:
If you've have experience using photoshop you can make millions making custom graphics in the Graphics Forum. I've seen people make forum tags for as little as 1m to literally 100's of millions. It is important to note if you are not good at photoshop and are intending to essentially paste text on an image you might be shamed off the forum.
Casino:
Fancy yourself a high roller? The casino can be a great way to garner some easy money, but also a great way to lose it all. Some people are able to acquire billions playing poker. You could find yourself lucky and when the lottery. A common rule of thumb for the casino is to never gamble more than you're willing to lose.
Flower/Plushie/Drug Running:
Ruinning is the act of flying to other countries to acquire either drugs, flowers or plushies. This can only be done by players level 15 or higher. You can get free flights/faster fly times and increase your carrying capacity by 10 by having a Private Island with an airstrip. Private Islands can cost hundreds of millions of dollars but you can rent them for substantially lower prices in the rental market. You can also raise your carrying capacity by 4 with a large suitcase. It is also nice to note you can raise your plushie/flower capacity by five by joining a seven star or higher Flower Shop or Toy Shop. You can check to make sure that there are items in stock at your destination by using DoctorN's Travel Hub.
Bank Investments:
A staple passive income is to simply invest unused income in the bank for up to 2B, and 3B if you join an Oil Rig. This should give enough income to satisfy basic training needs (buying xanax, points, and more on the daily basis).

Currently writing a beginners tutorial to see if it's well received/liked. The purpose and aim for the tutorial is to have brief explanation on simple ins and outs of Torn City. Useful for people first starting the game, maybe a forward-able resource for those trying to help people learn to play, and even just a hot spot for useful links. It's just something fun I would like to do in my free time. If you like this guide please let me know. If there's anything I should work on let me know. If you find any unreasonable spelling or grammatical errors feel free to let me know. If you have anything you think I should add feel free to let me know. Hope someone finds it useful, and I will work on it soon.
