Ok here's my hot take on the black cat= bad luck trope. I am 21 and have done no research, but I am superstitious.
1) From my understanding, superstition relies on the foundational basis that there is a higher power or energy that determines your fate. There are certain things you can do to earn bad luck (breaking mirrors, stepping under ladders) or good luck (carrying a bride over the threshold of a new house). There are certain things that you have no control over (seeing a black cat, finding a penny on heads or a four leaf clover).
2) In terms of superstition, seeing a sign of luck is an unavoidable event, good or bad. If it happens to you, it symbolizes that the higher power of the universe that decides your fate is attributing that luck to you.
3) So, if you randomly encounter a black cat, it's supposed to be a sign from the universe that you are fated to have bad luck. You cannot undo it, it is a predetermined event. You can't change course. If it's not a chance encounter (you own the cat, or seek it out), it doesn't count because it's not a sign.
4) Psychologists would argue that these signs have no real meaning. If you believe in them, you'll notice trends in your life that reinforce them (confirmation bias). If you don't believe in them, you won't notice the trends.
TLDR; If you believe black cats cause bad luck, you will probably seem to have bad luck after seeing one, only if it's a random encounter. You can't reverse the encounter. If you don't believe they cause bad luck, you probably won't notice any change in your life.
