It's a total wild card. Generally speaking, older people and people with immunodeficiencies are at a higher risk of severe illness and/or complications (as with most illnesses), but you do get asymptomatic old folks and teenagers that end up bedridden. Even patients who show no symptoms can transmit it to vulnerable people, so whereas coronavirus might not be a big risk for one given person, it could land one of their friends of family members in the ICU. And with all these new variants cropping up, who knows how the virus might progress--it may well get worse for all we know, endangering everyone.

In short, it's not a disease to be taken lightly.

Angryscotsman talked about 1 in 500 have died from Covid in the US. 1 out of 107 people have also died in car accidents...

And I'm sure that 1 out of 107 would be way higher if not for protective measures like seatbelts, airbags, and traffic regulations.
Or are you going to start bitching about those too? Are seatbelt laws infringing on your freedom of choice?


Granted, if it wasnt for all the travel bans, lockdowns, and other measures these casualties might've been a little higher, but still. It's not the plague and we shouldn't treat it like it is..

The Spanish Flu wasn't the plague either, but it spread like wildfire and decimated vulnerable communities. As of yet coronavirus is not the plague, and yes, our healthcare system has improved drastically since 1918, but with all these new mutations we could soon see a far more potent version of COVID than the strains we've experienced so far.

Coronavirus is spreading mostly among the unvaccinated. Mostly in countries where the vaccine is in short supply and people CAN'T access it. In places like Belgium, where you can easily access the vaccine, it's spreading among people like you who refuse to grow up and get their shots. This is why you have to jump through hoops to partake in public events--authorities don't want to risk a repeat of the rapid propagation of the virus seen in Europe last spring. Since you don't have the protection the vaccine offers, they have to test you and make sure you're not contagious.


In short: you can either be a big boy and get your shots, sit around by yourself until the epidemic is under control, or grin and bear Europe's restrictions without bitching. Your choice.
