Gonna collaborate extra on this, this is primarily an issue in competitive and semi-competitive games, it won't stand up much in an actual study since my own personal experience is purely anecdotal, but I can definitely tell that especially low skilled players treat you very differently depending on do they perceive you as a guy or a gal based on your voice/username/avatar.

There is a thing called semantic drift, previously innocent word can often over time get a degrading association in public lexicon, therefore most people are uncomfortable hearing them from complete strangers because as it turns out, when dealing with random person online we can not be 100% sure what are their intentions and, generally, will have to assume what you meant based on the common usage.
While I am fairly certain you meant no harm here, jumping on attack when someone goes "Hey sorry, that word has pretty bad connotations nowadays and many would find it offensive, you might want to rethink using it" is a weird thing to do?

It also shows people in countries less tolerant than ours that this can be won, that change can happen, that not everything is lost.
