There is a truth that hangs low over the modern world , a truth too heavy for most to carry, and too inconvenient for many to acknowledge: not everyone can be rich. Not everyone will rise. Not everyone even begins life with their feet on the same ground. And the real tragedy? We live in a world that pretends otherwise.
We are taught to believe in the horizon, that endless, shining place where anyone can go if only they want it badly enough. It is a comforting illusion: that the human journey is a fair race, where effort equals reward, and determination will surely pave the road upward. But this myth, alluring as it is, collapses under the weight of reality. Because the truth is, not all of us begin at the starting line. Some are born halfway up the hill, others at the foot of the mountain, and many deep underground, clawing their way through inherited rubble just to see daylight.
When we speak of success, we often speak in absolutes, “make it,” “get rich,” “reach the top.” But we rarely pause to ask: What does it cost to even begin the journey? What must be sacrificed just to get to zero?
There is a profound difference between starting from nothing, and starting from less than nothing. And yet, society treats them as the same. But they are not. To start from zero is to have a blank slate, no wealth, perhaps, but also no debt, no chronic burden, no inherited crisis. You have space to move, time to think. The world may still be hard, but it is a path of your own forging.
But to start from the negative, that is a different kind of existence entirely. It is not a climb, it is an excavation. You are not just building something; you are first unbuilding the chaos that was handed to you. You are the emergency contact, the therapist, the breadwinner, the translator of pain in a family that never had peace. You are not climbing toward success, you are trying to find firm ground to stand on. And by the time you do, the world has already sprinted ahead, telling you, “You’re late.”
This is not bitterness. It is clarity. And it matters because systems love to blame the struggler for their pace. The person carrying the heaviest load is told they simply need to run faster. The one who works two jobs to feed siblings is told to “grind harder.” The student who drops out to care for a sick parent is told they “gave up too soon.” This cruelty is disguised as motivation. But in truth, it is ignorance, a refusal to see the deeper landscape of human experience.
Money, in this world, is not just a goal, it is a gatekeeper. And the gates open more easily to those whose hands are free. If you do not have to think about food, or shelter, or whether your mother will make rent this month, you have room, room to dream, room to plan, room to fail safely and try again. That room is invisible to those who have always had it. But for the rest, it is everything. It is the difference between building a future and surviving another day.
Even something as seemingly simple as education is not equal. Some can go to school and study without interruption. Others are balancing classes with part-time jobs, with caregiving, with exhaustion. And in the end, when both graduate, we pretend they walked the same road. They didn’t.
Here lies the deeper philosophical wound: we confuse equal potential with equal condition. Yes, perhaps every human soul contains the potential for greatness. But potential is a seed, and seeds need soil. Sunlight. Water. Time. Safety. If we plant one seed in a barren desert and another in a fertile garden, we cannot call the first lazy when it does not bloom.
We also forget: wealth is not just money, it is time, attention, freedom from crisis, permission to fail. These things are inherited as much as they are earned. A child who grows up loved, fed, and encouraged may never realize how rare that foundation is. A child who grows up fighting for every basic right often cannot even name what they’ve missed, only that something essential was always just out of reach.
And yet, despite all of this, some people still rise. Not because the world is fair, but because they are relentless. They are building while bleeding. They are pushing through without rest. They are not just chasing a dream, they are trying to rewrite fate. And that is sacred.
But it should not be romanticized. Resilience is noble, yes, but it should not be required in such brutal measure just to reach mediocrity. When survival becomes an achievement, something has gone wrong at the level of society.
So when we talk about success, about ambition, wealth, growth, let us talk honestly. Let us speak not just of how far someone has come, but of where they began, and what they carried. Let us recognize that a million dollars earned by someone whose family had nothing is a different kind of triumph than the same sum inherited and multiplied. Not lesser or greater but different in meaning, in sacrifice, in weight.
And most of all, let us make space for those whose victories are quiet. The ones who didn’t “make it big,” but made it through. The ones who didn’t get rich, but broke a generational curse. The ones who may never own a house, but ensured their siblings had a chance to dream.
Because in the end, the measure of a life is not only in how high you climbed, but in how deep you had to reach just to stand
