What in the world is this?
(If you're still confused after reading this, send me a message)

This, my friend, is the forum game known as Mafia, or Werewolf. At it's most basic level, it is a game of the Uninformed Majority versus the Informed Minority.

The basic idea of Mafia is that out of all the people playing, there's a small group of betrayers trying to bring everyone else down. The betrayers are theMafia, sometimes called "scum" or other unpleasant names. Everyone else is in the Town, otherwise called "villagers" or "innocents" or so forth.

The Town's goal is to get rid of all the scum players. They do this by taking a majority vote each game Day for who they want to get rid of. The Mafia's goal is to outlast all of the Townies until they control the majority vote, at which time there's nothing the Town can do to stop the scum from completely taking over. They can do this by avoiding being voted out and killing players during the Night phases following each game Day. The crowd that starts the game gets whittled down until eventually only one faction remains in the game.

So strategically, the game comes down to Townies finding and voting out the Mafia as often as possible. The Mafia tries to avoid getting voted out and kill off the players who threaten them at Night.

An FAQ for players

The Rules

General
  • Read all the rules. Ignorance of rules is generally not a valid excuse.
  • All sitewide rules apply. Duh.
  • This is a Open setup. All possible roles are known to everyone.
  • Pretending to break a rule will be treated as if you actually broke it.
  • If you're not sure whether a specific post you want to make would break a rule, ask the mod before posting.
Moderation
  • These are the moderators:
    • tn5421
Posting
  • Do not impersonate the mod.
  • Once the game starts, do NOT post in this thread unless you are on the list in the first reply.
  • Try not to overuse bold text.
  • You may NOT edit posts you make in this thread after the game begins.
  • Posts must be fully readable. No hidden text, no text too small to read, no cryptography.
  • Do not quote your Role PM or any thread-external communications with the mod or another player (e.g. mod PMs, scum/Mason quicktopics, etc). You may paraphrase.
  • You may not post after you have died.
Voting
  • You can vote with the vote tags or the bold tags.
    • Examples of votes: VOTE: Doofus, Vote: Doofus, Vote: No lynch
    • Examples of unvotes: UNVOTE: Doofus, UNVOTE:, Unvote
    • Unvotes before vote switches are not necessary.
  • If something looks like a vote, the mod will clarify whether that vote counts in the next votecount, and may choose to also edit the offending post for clarity. If someone is accidentally hammered or something because of this, too bad.
  • Votes inside spoiler tags (or any field that can be collapsed) will not count.
  • Votes do not have to be at the start of a line or in their own paragraph, but most of the players will hate you if you don't do so.
  • Once a majority is voting for one player or for no lynch, the decision is fixed and no further votes or unvotes will take effect.
Phases/Deadlines
  • Each Day phase will last 7 days.
  • If there is no majority by deadline, no lynch will occur, regardless of whether the mod is currently online at the deadline to make said result official.
  • Each Night phase will last 48hours (2 days), regardless of whether the mod is currently online at the deadline to make the results official.
Activity
  • You should try to post once every 24 hours.
  • If you don't post for 72 hours, you will receive a prod. You then have 24 hours to respond to said prod in-thread (not by PM). Prods sent will be noted in-thread
  • You will be force-replaced for inactivity under one of the following conditions:
    • You are about to receive a third prod.
    • You do not respond to a prod in 24 hours.
  • If the mod decides, at their discretion, that your activity has substantially improved, they may choose to expire one of your prods or allow you more than three prods before replacement.
  • You may declare V/LA by posting in-thread your expected day of return. Once your stated V/LA time expires and you have not yet posted you will receive a reminder that you are now on the prod clock. Note however that if your stated V/LA is too long (such as two weeks), the mod may choose to replace you.
Replacements
  • Players who choose to replace out may PM the mod a message they wish to send to their replacement, which will be relayed at about the same time they receive their role PM (as a result, must be sent in before the replacement is found). This message should be treated as a role PM and therefore may not be quoted, only paraphrased. Force-replaced players may not necessarily be allowed to do this, depending on the nature of the force-replace.
  • If a replacement occurs during Day with three days or less left in the deadline, the deadline will be suspended while the replacement is happening and reset to three days once it is completed.
  • Replacements may ask for an extension of up to three days, but only in their first few posts. You can't replace in early in a Day, wait until close to deadline, then ask for a replacement extension. The mod has the right to disallow this extension request.
  • If a replacement occurs during Night, the Night will continue for 24 hours after the replacement is complete (unless this would make it shorter than usual).
Endgame
  • Note that these win conditions are generic and should not be used to assume any particular role or faction is in the game.
  • Special Setup Note: If the remaining players are one SK and one Mafia, the SK will automatically win. (AKA: SK wins 1:1 endgames with mafia)
Mod Requests
  • If you notice a mistake with a votecount or similar, post so in the thread and the mod will fix it.
  • If you need a rule clarified, you may post in-thread or PM the mod.

Elim2020 Hot Take: Leaders Don't Matter · · 59 likes

So called Team Leaders don't matter as much as they like to think they do.

All of their so called alliances, tools, and organization don't matter when half of your team's members don't give a damn what you have to say and go do their own thing.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm tired of reading about their incredibly fake & manufactured drama.

Break free from their useless abstractions and do what you were going to do anyway: beat the shit out of others for fun and profit.

Linux Mint also "just works". They aren't doing anything exciting, and that is the point.  They're all about providing a stable experience.

If you have recent equipment in your computer (3 years old or less) then you may run into some issues here or there with the new stuff not being stable yet.

That distro has always Just Worked for me when I needed something that would boot up every time, and it only broke when I broke it doing stupid shit.

Baldurs Gate should work fine by default. You'll need to specifically opt in to use Proton for Civilization 6, because the version numbers between Windows and Linux aren't equal and some of the DLC content isn't available on Linux, despite the Linux port otherwise working fine.

Bazzite is fine so long as you only use that machine for gaming, but you'll quickly find it stifling should you try to use it like you'd use any other general purpose Linux desktop.
