It's nuanced, and I'm no expert, but I think stereotypes like that ("harmless ones", like this, or Asians being good at math) may not be negative inherently, but they trivialize the people they're about, reducing them down to simple stereotypes, instead of judging them as individual people with all the differences that comes with it.
It's one thing to say "a lot of black people like rap music". Statistically, it's probably true. I think the harm comes when people follow that stereotype too far and it becomes "that person is black, they like rap music", because that kind of intellectual laziness lets you skip past actually considering them as a full person.
There's probably a lot more too it though - you're asking a great question. And for example, ever wonder why watermelons in this racist stereotype? A web search is easy enough. After all, as they said above, the vast majority of people of all kinds like watermelon to some degree, right? So why is the stereotype only for black people? Maybe it's worth asking.
But if you're just going on stereotypes, asking doesn't come to mind. It's harmless anyway, right?
