Now for the sports: An ad plays for the new stadium just on the outskirts of the city urging viewers to purchase tickets for the upcoming game
That sounds wonderful and now time for the weather, Craig?
Craig: yes it does, its expected to be first of many games to come. For weather tomorrow is going to be a high of 64°F and a low of 45°F with a precipitation of 0%, wind gusts up to 10 mph and a humidity of 57% back to you.
Nicole: thanks Craig now to politics: Alderman Marshall Hughes was campaigning today in Downtown as he laid out his plans if he were to be elected as Mayor
A video plays
Hughes: If I am elected as mayor, I vow to do everything within my power to curb the crime in our city and I plan to do this while also investing city funds into expanding programs to help people get on their feet in this city without resorting to crime. I also plan on making universal plans to provide free rehab for many of Torn's citizens to help curb the drug problem in our city, a responsibility of the city. My devotion is to the city and to the people of Torn.
Nicole: we also got an interview with Alderman Armstrong who had this to say
interview footage plays
Gibson: So what are some of your other ideas if you were to be elected Mayor Mr. Armstrong?
Armstrong: Well, what i think this city needs isn't coddling, this is Torn City after all the people of this City are tough. Built to weather any storm that hits this city but I do acknowledge we have problems such as rising gang violence and the drug crisis along with just regular crime and overcrowding prison capacity issues. So as far as development goes I seek to build another prison to address the capacity issue and as for drugs I say we invest in more anti-drug measures within our police departments, we need to wage a war on drugs. That means harsher sentences for drug possession and manufacturing, I dont believe Rehab is going to solve this problem. And for gang violence and overall crime, we need a stronger police force as in we need to hire more cops, equip them with better gear such as military weapons and they need to be able to crackdown on these criminals, these thugs that hold our city hostage while the average person is just trying to get by.
Gibson: And how do you feel about your main opponents stance on this?
Armstrong: He doesn't understand what this city truly needs, he thinks if we coddle these criminals then that will magically fix the issues meanwhile raising our taxes to pay for these programs which just seem doomed to fail from the start. We need to deal with these issues with a firm hand.
Nicole: when we interviewed Hughes after his campaign, he had this to say
Footage of the interview plays
Payton: So what else can you tell viewers at home about your policies?
Hughes: well its like this, if we want people to stop committing crimes we need to offer essential services and social programs
Payton: And how do you feel about your Main opponent Armstrong and how he plans to tackle these issues?
Hughes: I think he doesnt really have the best intentions for the city and its people as his policies are just expanding a temporary solution but it doesnt really address the underlying problems to these issues and is a narrow way of looking at it. His main solution seems to be just arresting more people and turning our city into a police state and just building more prisons when one fills up. I dont know about you but to me that doesnt seem like a solution, just a bandaid on a bigger issue. And I have heard he plans to add forced labor for inmates in what he called a work release program, who does that really benefit? Society or the companies who put their manufacturing inside those prisons?
Peña: Thats all we have time for tonight, this has been the news with Channel 5 News im Ryan Peña
Nicole: And im Nicole Batcher, goodnight Torn City
The outro plays and goes to a political ad putting Armstong in a positive light
