From the experience I've had with beta so far, it seems like all territories have a static win condition of one faction in a war acquiring 1,000,000 points from having people stationed in the territory. This leads to a lower limit on the amount of time necessary to capture a territory of ~27.8 hours. For some territories, namely the low value ones around the edge of the map, this seems like a long time to fight over something that has little value.
In addition, keeping the number of points needed to win constant across all territory values will affect the dynamics of the territory war system in a way that I believe is detrimental to the strengths of the system. The most interesting part of the territory war system so far is the management of your faction's holdings across wide areas of the map. If wars proceed slowly, as they currently do in the system, then that gives factions lots of time to react to the strategies of their opponents. I think this slow-paced gameplay is not the best route to go. Instead, territory wars could be games of reactions, where low-value territories could be lost in hours and highly-valued territories would require intense fights to secure. Such an approach would create a Torn City that is dynamic and fast-changing, where territory maps change daily, and your corner drug store could belong to JFA one day and DA the next.
The implementation I propose that will change the amount of time typically spent on wars in territories of different values is to make the points necessary to secure the territory depend on its respect value. For territories worth 35 respect a day, an uncontested 10 man ladder should be able to secure the territory overnight -- between 5 and 8 hours. This would make the extremities of the map fast and exciting, while allowing strong new factions to cut in a territory quickly. For higher value territories, the point value necessary for victory should be higher so that it is less likely a surprise attack would result in an uncontested win -- there should be opportunity for a fight over high value territories if the defender wishes to.
Tests of my own suggest a logistic form to the territory point curve:
Points = 10**6 / (1 + e**(-.05 (x - 75) )
where x is the respect value per day of the territory. This structure results in 50 respect territories taking a bit over 6 hours to claim uncontested, while 200 respect territories would still take 27.7 hours.
I look forward to hearing how other citizens think the territory wars should play out -- whether every territory should take a day to take even if the faction isn't contesting, or if people agree that lower value territories should be able to be taken more quickly. I would also be interested in approaches that include varying the number of people allowed on the ladder in high value territories -- this could be another interesting dynamic.
Disclosure: I recently joined in the second wave of factions admitted to the beta test, so its is possible there are nuances I haven't seen yet. If this is the case, I will amend my post to reflect any new information.
Would be nice if there was somewhere we could go to see a sorted list of faction rankings in the new war system. This could be integrated into the current HoF or placed elsewhere.
