I retract my previous statement (about needing an indicator if something was present)...I was tried dragging my mouse and that worked like crap. Used the suggested snake method and got 2 items from a single map scroll. Leather Jacket and Swiss Army Knife :).

I wouldn't mind there being some sort indicator that an item is even present on the map. Otherwise I'd probably spend hours looking at a map which has no items, which would only frustrate me :(
