Right, fuck it. I’m running for Captain this Elim.

I was planning on running anyway for reasons mentioned below, but after seeing the changes to the Captain system I think the vote is even more important this year.

The old system at least meant you ended up with three Captains who had all been directly voted for by the team. Now there’s one Captain, and they get to choose their own leadership team.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried that this just means the biggest players just end up picking their mates and the same old people end up running the show.

That’s always been my issue with Elim leadership. The biggest players and most popular names naturally have a massive advantage. They already know each other, have their own networks and private Discords, and then the rest of the team gets told what the plan is after “leadership had decided”. 

There are 1,000 people in each team. Those 1,000 people are the ones actually thrown into the meat grinder every 15 mins for tickets. So if something genuinely affects the whole team, why shouldn’t they get a say in it?

That’s basically the AUX campaign.

Big stuff? Put it to the team.

Important discussions with other teams? Tell the team what’s going on.

Not every tiny decision obviously, but the things that actually matter.

I’m not a big player. I don’t run a massive faction or have some huge network behind me. I’m just a normal player that flies, wars and scrans my xans, who also wants to see if we can do Elim a bit differently.

And I’d genuinely like to see other people do the same in their teams.

Not 50 people running and splitting the vote. Just a few genuine alternatives to the usual names.

Because the big players have the stats, factions, dirty bombs and connections.

The minnows have the numbers and the power.

1,000 votes in every team, let’s fucking use them.

Maybe I get absolutely slaughtered in the voting, then fair play. 

But if enough teams do it, maybe we can cause a bit of a ruckus.

tldr: new captain system makes the system favour big players more than before, if a small guy in a few teams wins and runs the teams democratically you might see a more exciting elim this year, I’m putting myself forward for whatever team I land in.

Thanks Astro! It was an honour to fight alongside my fellow scientists. Thank you to the leadership and the whole team for making it such a fun event. 

I had a blast working alongside my fellow push captains and motivators on those late night pushes, big shout out to all of you! 

Exactly why it can’t just be one person doing it. Hardly a cry for attention when the whole point is encouraging other people to do the same.

I comprehend you fine. You’re just getting weirdly angry at someone with less than a year of playtime suggesting that one of the main events could be better for the thousands of people actually playing it…

I’ve never claimed to know the game better than people who’ve played it for years. I’ve said that already.

You seem to think that means I shouldn’t run. I think it’s exactly why someone like me should do.

The players who know Elim inside out already have plenty of opportunities to run it their way. I’m giving the 1,000 people who don’t have that experience a different option.

You’re welcome to think it’s a stupid idea. That’s what the vote is for.

Yeah, and honestly I don’t disagree with the information asymmetry point. If we’re voting on something and the other teams know exactly what we’re doing, obviously that’s a disadvantage.

But that’s also why I’m saying this needs to happen across multiple teams. If one team tries it, we’ll absolutely get farmed to fuck. 

If several teams do it, suddenly the whole dynamic changes.

I’m not claiming this is the optimal strategy for winning Elim. I’m saying it’s a bit stale, and I’d rather try something different than spend another year watching people play the same political game.

If that means it’s a 12th place finish, so be it.

Of course there are more “qualified” players than me. That’s not exactly a controversial statement. 

I’m not claiming to be the best player. I’m putting myself forward because I think a Captain should represent the team, not just be the person with the biggest account.

If you think only the most qualified players should bother running, then we’ve found the exact reason I’m running.

The idea isn’t for one team to handicap itself with democracy. It’s for enough teams to do it that the whole game has to adapt.

Fair comment. I’m not saying every single decision needs a 1000 player poll and obviously some things are more sensitive. 

And that’s why I want other teams to do it, if one team does it we’re fucked. 

If the majority of teams are all democratically deciding what to do it gets more interesting, and making it more interesting is half the point.

So many complaints about big players running the show every year, and their solution to fix that is to let the big players just pick their own leadership team..?
