I myself use 3ds max, Blender, photoshop, Sony vegas & DaVinci.
Each one has its own use for me depending on the final product/application it will be used for etc. I will always recommend blender to any artist with a pc. It's 100% free and you can do just about anything you want.
Text work, animations, drawing, painting, fluid simulations video editing.
I started with blender then slowly moved into the paid programs. Save your money when you can the free programs out there are amazing if you give them time!
