$895m for a yacht for only +500 happy and 1 honor seems like a bad deal. Below explores why Torn may be against MORE BENEFIT(S) for the yacht AND why there should be, followed by my recommendations.
Why the yacht has no other benefit(s)
Why the yacht should have other benefit(s)
Suggested benefit(s)
Benefits detail/summary
Maintenance cost
1. Why the yacht has no other benefit(s):
Yachts aren’t:
Cheap; they cost millions to billions to buy on top of eye watering maintenance costs
Economical to own or use
A fast way to travel
Practical, especially considering there often gigantic stature
Yachts are ONLY good for:
Cruising in a highly personalised and luxurious environment
Hosting gimmicky, extravagant parties
WHY THE YACHT HAS NO OTHER BENEFIT(S):
Yachts are famous for being extremely expensive and having little value other than to show off via parties or cruising, as above. Therefore, Torn sees this like spinning the wheel(s) with Leslie; it's not meant to be profitable/overly beneficial, that is the whole point.
Also the point is that the people that buy these yachts "have more money than sense" and it is something they can easily afford so why not have it?
As such benefits from the yacht will surely be largelyoutweighed by the drawbacks?
2. Why the yacht should have other benefit(s):
As above, benefits may ARGUABLY be largelyoutweighed by the drawbacks, hence + 500 happy and 1 honor. It's obvious a yacht is not value for money, however one is unlikely to buy a yacht for such insignificant, arguably non existent benefits when considering the fee involved and that it is a yacht.
It is agreed the benefits of the yachtshouldnotbeoverly good as with the point I think u make of buying a yacht, as above. However, the thresholdshould bere-considered.
3. Suggested benefit(s):
Yachts are:
A status symbol – if u own a yacht (or are pretending too) that strongly implies u have power/influence. Why because the yacht means u probably belong to “higher” social circle(s), i.e. u have powerful contacts.
Could this give u a higher credit rating with Duke, or a reduction in jail time, or hospital time because of a “favorable” reputation?
Could this give u access to a special yacht members club? This could give u discounts on certain items in Torn and, or abroad?
Following yacht club idea, perhaps it will give u access to a VIP section of the casino where there are exclusive games only yacht members can play? Also, maybe u get given more casino chips as u are a VIP.
A great way for aforementioned “higher” circles to network – they often congregate in rich people areas like Monaco.
Could this lead to record breaking, multi-billion dollar deals? I think it could. Could this increase your ability as a company director to sell more of your service and or product than someone who doesn’t have the “big fish” contacts?
Could it also justify charging slightly more for an equivalent product/service without total revenuedecreasing?
Could this make a non-10 star company grow faster?
A good way to party it up – I can’t personally vouch for that but through what I have seen online, on the movies, etc. it looks like they can be a lot of fun.
Surely this would make your happiness increase quicker, or if it’s an activity u do then it will increase it by a certain amount?
4. Benefits detail/summary:
From increased reputation:
Higher credit rating with Duke
Reduction by %X in jail time
Reduction by %X in hospital time
Option to join yacht members club [cool name needed]:
A fee would be needed to join (one off fee, or recurring)
Grants %X discount on certain items in and, or out of Torn
Grants access to VIP area of casino with exclusive games that only VIPs can play
Grants additional XXX casino tokens every day
From networking:
Increase company revenue by %X
Ability to charge slightly higher prices for product/service without negative decline in revenue. This would be by %X.
Grow a company’s star rating faster, possibly as a result of above two points. [If no, method needed to quantify this in numbers]
From partying on a yacht:
Happiness increases by additional X% every 15 minutes
OR, if “partying on my big ass yacht” is an activity, increase happiness by X,XXX and if it exceeds your full happy it will revert to full happy at the next 15 minute cycle.
5. Maintenance cost:
If we are to have other yacht benefit(s) there should be staff costs relating to upkeep of the yacht, otherwise it’s unrealistic.
My suggestion:
An Investopedia article (link below) states “an owner should expect to pay around 10% of a yacht’s initial purchase priceannually to keep it running”.
10% of $895m = $89.5m/year.
$89.5m / 365.25 days = $245,038 (0 d.p.)/ yacht staff cost per day
I think that’s a nice simple method to quantify a realistic cost on Torn, assuming we get more benefit(s) :P
I imagine this has been thought of many a time before by staff and Torn civilians a like. I'm guessing there is a good reason why this hasn't been implemented, or just that staff are likely contently inundated with urgent jobs. Nonetheless, I say yes!
To change the subject slightly, my understanding is that the player committee is involved in helping Ched understand different viewpoints from a diversity of players so that he and, or they can make informed decisions about the future direction of Torn.
This is a good, respectable method to make decisions but the problem is there is a lack of transparency to substantiate this. When updates are occasionally controversial this raises an issue of trust. It's clear that reviving had to stop being unlimited but when so many people have expressed concerns then one is naturally curious to question the decision making behind this update.
I believe increased transparency on such decisions would advantageous to the community. For example, there could be a read only thread that we can see a summary of the viewpoints of each committee member. Perhaps one bullet point for each member which can be categorized as either those for or against the update. I understand u can't make everything public, e.g. inside knowledge used to exploit the game, but I think particularly major updates that have been approved for release like this one should be shared so we can understand things that perhaps we are missing sometimes.
This could be interpreted as an attempt to let the players dictate the direction of the game and to be clear this is not what I'm suggesting. I'm suggesting major updates implemented should have the committee discussions concisely summarised per committee member so that we can get an insight. Imo, being more open will on occasion allow a large group of players that may share the same insight that may have been missed by the committee to express this concern and give the game the opportunity to increase the sense of community.
Coming back to Arson_Daily's post. I too have my own reason to unsubscribe from Torn separate to this update. This update only reinforces my decision not to renew my subscription. If anyone else like saritarach is also unhappy then unsubscribe and please post about it.
Hello CloudJumper. I haven't had a previous warning to make this the last warning.
I'm frustrated with having to keep turning off the news ticker every time I login.
I understand and agree with your point and I will stop posting in this thread.
Having updated this comment on April 5th, 2021 I can see the new dark mode feature on / off switch works perfectly.
Imo the news ticker is not optional and the buggy switch is a way to make us give up over time so that we read whatever u want us to. The switch will be removed eventually.
