Hello!

I joined Elims with the same goal that I have for the rest of Torn: To make friends!

And gain connections, respect and power. 

I wish I had gotten a screenshot of the first few days of Elims because we had at the very least a dozen people to at highest maybe 20 folks in there not only wanting to talk about Elims but also about Torn as a whole. And I don’t know about you, but I know I really fucking love talking about Torn. 

Guesting around other factions is highly recommended but compared to Elims, that’s like going to someone’s block and hanging out for a little bit. Meanwhile, being in a VC with a dozen other people and a discord server with 1.4k active people was like sitting in a bustling downtown in one of the most frequented districts of Torn itself.

All teams were melting pots, truly. People would jump in and ask questions about a certain play style or mechanic of the game and there would be someone else in there who’s specialty was that particular approach. There were vets who wanted to see the spark in newbs eyes get lit and they were going to do whatever to help light it. Newbs themselves who were eager to show their strength and dedication. Traders and merc’s lurking around for lucrative business deals, Faction leaders who wanted to see who they could ally themselves with, trolls who were actively working to make the game more exciting ;3c…anything and everything. 2.1k ways to play Torn all wrapped in one team and so many people having a strong desire to connect and learn as much as they could.

Then there was the politics. Dear God, the politics. Not going to lie, I expected more out of that i.e dirty bombs changing hands, exclusive deals amongst the upper echelon of Torn (which still may very well happen as at the time of writing this we still have half the teams in), maybe a few more raids occurring. There were many times during VC that the topic had changed to identifying and learning who the top players of Torn were though and how they effected the game.

“FidelCashFlow may be a troll, but he and MeanMike are one of the top trolls and trolling in itself is an art so don’t automatically mark them as a negative for their respective teams, power is power. Also, go look at their profile descriptions because they're funny as fuck.”

“Haven’t you heard? One of our Captains is the leader of Monarch Chrysalis so that’s also going to come into play.”

“Yes, Bumbi’s a shitposter, but he’s a visible member of the community and he does guest around multiple factions quite a lot.”

“Andymans’ really good at gaining information, on top of being well respected in the community.” 

“I know -Thor- has an insane enemy count, but he regularly plays a character and absolutely has the ability to actually lead.” 

“Oh? You don’t know about JoyBoy_616? Let me tell you about him,”

“HT-SuperMikk has been playing Torn longer than the majority of those here have been alive.” 

“Just because they’re losing lives doesn’t mean they’re actually out of the game next, just watch and see.”

So not only were we learning about actual game mechanics, we were learning about the history of Torn itself through both its players and the written records of Elims. It really added an immense amount of depth to the game and I think fed into a lot of new players desire to play the game on a more dedicated front. 

A few tips for those who are wanting to make next years Elims their first Elims:

• Torn is a text based game. If you can’t read a simple “Elims Basics” guide, you shouldn’t sign up. 

• Figure out who you’re talking to fast as they might be able to 1-800-beat-your-ass.

• Find someone who has experience and try to be friends w/them w/o looking like a fuck ass noob.

• Learn how to use scripts and the Discord bots fast.

• Sometimes, the trolls are just experienced players who are sick of people not listening to their advice and have little patience. Sometimes they’re just fuck ass noobs who literallly know nothing. Figure it out.

• Activity is more important than stats, but yes, your stats do affect how many targets you get. It’s okay to be cannon fodder for your team as well.

There's a ton more, but this isn't a tips and tricks thread. 

Final thoughts:

Is it rigged? Kinda, not really but also can be. It’s been rigged in the past, it will be rigged again in the future. Torn imitates life and alliances are a huge part of both. I don’t think my first Elims was rigged, I would’ve targeted us too. Either way, don't let that stop you. Certainly join up if you want to get more out of the game, & lord knows Elims offers so much more than just a few merits. I walked away with what I wanted out of Elims. 

I mean if the dev's wanted to add more merits or rewards I wouldn't be opposed that that either cough cough.
