Not all jobs are equal. We want Americans to work jobs that allow them to participate in the economy meaningfully - either we pay these people slave wages, or we subsidize dirt-cheap screw assembly with so much extra government cash that the economy inevitably takes a hit keeping these new jobs afloat. American industries import cheap stuff to craft into the expensive stuff they export - we want to make more expensive stuff, not spend a ton of money making more cheap stuff.
This. In addition, why would we want to waste our relatively educated workforce on cheapo base-level manufacturing? We buy loads of base components from China, then combine them into the shit people actually want to buy. Paying a bunch of Americans $7.25/hr to manufacture the basic bolts and widgets currently manufactured in China is not going to elevate hardly anyone out of poverty or strengthen our economy.
