I started playing Torn about a month and a half ago. One week in I was happily doing crimes, searching the dump like a noob and selling scrap for scraps before I wised up. The usual.
I was in for a shock when my little green leaf disappeared. Out of nowhere I was attacked -- that's a thing? -- and even worse, I was 'mugged.' Just like that, $5,000 gone. Not much, but when your primary source of income to that point had been finding Goodwill clothing at the dump and selling it for a few hundred bucks, that's a lot.
I knew I had to find a way to defend my stash. I missed out on the piggy bank, I deposited $3,000 into the investment bank before I knew it was locked up and I couldn't deposit more. Where to put it? Items? Not very liquid, and you put a big target on your back when you sell. Rows and rows of trailers? That's a losing game. Points? I can't afford that!
But then I discovered the casino. On a lark I put $1,000 on my favorite team to win, and they did. I expected the money to just land in my account, but instead I was given an option. Payout. I could take it all or just the one bet. There was no timer, no limit. That was it, I thought. That's how I keep my money safe.
Since then, all my money goes to the bookie. I have discovered better ways of making money, but the storage strategy works. Make random low-risk bets -- $10k here, $20k there, $50k on that one -- and slowly my Bookie balance increases. If I need a lot of cash, I can take it all. If I need a little, I can cash out individual smaller bets. Sure you lose money in the long-term on sports betting, but lots of small bets evens out the risk, and my stats show I am at about 95% payout overall. That's on par with a single mugging, and it feels better losing it to the casino than a random mug, you know? Plus it's kind of funny when I do get mugged and they walk away with nothing.
I recently discovered Baldr's tips for new players and his section on storing money. I was surprised that my method of Bookie Banking didn't appear at all. Am I missing something? Are there downsides I am not aware of? Or did I find a legit strat for storing money and avoiding mugging losses?
Torn staff seem to have an issue understanding that people can live under the same roof and share the same IP address. Not one but two different people in my faction have been temporarily fedded because of this, with their spouse in one case and sibling in another permanently fedded. This isn't just dumb and frustrating for people who aren't breaking any rules, but also permanently hurts Torn as a game because it drives away actual players who have the grave misfortune of cohabitating with another player.
I'd considered it but wasn't aware of any items that sold at or near their sell-value. I also wasn't sure if there was a daily limit on items you could sell back, like there is with item purchases. Someone else in this thread mentioned cars, and it looks like your suggestion of grenades also fits the bill for this. This is probably a better option overall so I may have to abandon my gambling ways, haha.
1) I don't roll winnings into new bets. The purpose of betting is to bank money, not make more money, so once it is in the system it is safe. Taking winnings out to make more bets defeats the purpose if the goal is treating it like a bank and not like a casino.
The real goal is to keep it safe for long enough to roll it into a large purchase or into a bank investment. That's what money comes out for, not for new bets.
2) I don't make large bets, I make lots of small bets, so it's not possible to get wiped out like you are suggesting. I don't even follow sports in general, so my bets are really fairly random and based mostly on what events are coming up soon (usually within the next hour) rather than what the sport is or where it is. Like, I'm betting on volleyball matches in Slovenia, not the NBA finals.
I found out about that as well, but the cashier's check only lasts for 24 hours before it dumps the money into your account, so not ideal for long-term storage since you have to interact with it every day.
