The legendary Money Wizard Gang ruled the dark alleys of Torn City, but today they faced their greatest enemy yet: a retail store inventory system.
Xanax the Purple, the Grand Magus of Compound Interest, slammed his staff onto the pavement. "Brothers! Our cult needs new blood! The billboard looks intimidating, the neon signs are glowing, and our capes are pristine. Yet, we have a crisis.""Did the rival faction steal our crypto cache?" whispered Ignatius the Fire Wizard, accidentally setting his sleeve on fire.
"Worse," Xanax hissed, pointing a gloved finger at his glowing green staff. "The batteries in my magical glow-stick are dying. And when I tried to buy replacements at the local convenience store, the cashier refused to accept our currency.
"Midas the Golden Wizard looked down at his heavy leather pouches. "Did you offer him the ancient gold doubloons? The sacred cash stacks wrapped in rubber bands?"
"I did!" Xanax cried. "But he said, 'Sir, this is a self-checkout lane, and you are trying to stuff a raw gold nugget into the receipt slot.' He threatened to call the cyber-guards.
"The wizards gasped. For an elite gang capable of amassing immense digital wealth and ruling Torn City from the shadows, dealing with the modern world was a logistical nightmare. Their sweeping ceremonial robes constantly got caught in automatic sliding doors, and Ignatius kept melting his touchscreen phone every time he tried to check their recruitment page.
"We must recruit someone new," declared Alistair the Blue, the quietest wizard who mostly handled the gang's spreadsheet magic. "A freshman. Someone who possesses the ultimate forbidden magic."
"The dark arts of tax evasion?" Ignatius asked eagerly.
"No," Alistair replied grimly. "A debit card that supports tap-to-pay."With a renewed sense of purpose, the Money Wizard Gang marched back into the neon-lit streets, ready to rule Torn City—just as soon as they could find a recruit who knew how to operate a modern parking meter.
