10 years ago today...an old-timers retrospective · · 99 likes

So, this post is going to be a bit of a retrospective on torn, a bit of a random post in terms of storytelling, and a little bit about my life, and the topsy-turvy nature that it's had.

10 Years ago today, I got out of Jail. I had spent 15 months, 2 days, 9 hours and 54 minutes in jail. I got out of jail, went to the library near where I was paroled and decided to sign up for "a good, online, text based, rpg". I didn't have a computer at my home, nor did I have money to buy one. I would eventually get a laptop, and I would eventually get a cell phone, but those were a little down the line.

Ya see, jail is a strange place. Before I went into jail I had a number of people that I would call my "friend". I had literally dozens of people in my cell phone that I could call at a moment's notice and make plans with. In jail, that all stopped. I went from being fairly popular to being entirely forgotten. It was a really strange experience. I suppose going to jail for that long (fraud, credit card theft, international credit card distribution... it was some pretty hefty charges) and for what I went for has an impact on friendships. Who knew.

When I started playing torn, it was a game in which a lot of the nice "quality of life" features, that you have today were not yet implemented. Examples: Crimes only went up to viruses, Max nerve bar was... around 35 I think, as there was nothing to get you above that. Factions existed and chaining was VERY different (the old max chain was around 11,000 or 12,000 since there was no "chain bonus") . Chains used to be divided up by targets, mass money used to be spent on spying and organizing and planning out chains, hitters, and who could be on when. There were fewer factions, more active players, and generally there were a lot more active people around. You had to click each time to use energy, 5e at a time... and the entire page would reload.

When I joined, BodyBagger hadn't even started yet, there were a few people with "Crazy stats" (ConfusedEmu and PunchBag, KingAce came along a bit later with his stats). Around 100k players the game really started to "boom". Players like Shahost, were playing the game and making billions off the stock market, banking (before it was changed) and massive market cornering for limited edition items.

Then came the first wave of money-sinks. Dogs, racing, housing. I recall back when palaces were the best housing in the game, and they cost 65m, and to my recollection only 2-3 people had them. The only way you could POSSIBLY earn one was to lead a faction and have MANY oc's paying into your pocket... but back then faction members typically got paid some cut of their OC participation.

I played daily...often multiple times a day during 2005 - 2007. I recall times I would roll out of bed with a girl, hop on my cell phone, and spend my energy in torn (much to their protest and now to my shame, hah). I was involved in one of the more powerful factions at the time (called TCU). We ended up splitting apart when Noctournal Beast went missing for a while, and my real life friend Devoid got banned for calling a then admin (Dime) a douchebag on irc, and hospitalizing him for about 2 weeks straight.

There was the "great crash" in 2007, or early 2008, when TC went down for multiple months. This is actually when life was really weird for me. I was in between jobs (and working to finish my degree). Most of my friends had quit TC at this point, and I was just sort of coasting. This is when I started to be a mercenary for various factions in TC. Being a gun for hire was interesting. I was appointed "war officer" of multiple different factions that I carried up considerably in rank... but I tired of that and eventually started wanting to be in a successful faction.

So I joined evolution and chained pretty heavily... and got the first dirty bomb in TC dropped on me. I sat in the hospital for around 52 of the 72 hours I landed in there before someone got me a couple neuemene tablets. I've been in the number 1 faction in torn on 5 of 6 different occasions.

Somewhere around here Westend quit, and stole something CRAZY like 90 billion from people, including about ~1b from me (which, against all odds he paid back like 3-4 years later)

I hit 50m+ in all stats back in 2008 or 2009, hit 1b stats in 2011, and 2b in early 2013. I'm currently somewhere at around 2.3 - 2.4b. I stopped taking 3 xan a day a year or two ago to get more education done... which I slack on all the time. Somewhere around 2009, I started playing torn poker heavily, and got to the point where I was up, multiple billions. I think at one point I was up around 10 - 15b overall in poker and I was turning all my cash into points when I would leave the table. It was sometime around here that there (they took the points market down for a while) where there was rumblings about how they would be removing the ability to buy DP's with points (They used to be 100 points each). I bought something REALLY stupid like 130 of them. I bought well over 10 years worth of DP's I haven't bought a DP since then and I still have well over 2700 days of DP time left. Around this time I started working, so since then my activity and time for torn has waned.

In my personal life I got done with college after working doing freelance web-design from 2007 - 2011 (when I finished college) Since then I've worked for. A medium sized alternative energy company, 2 startups, wikipedia, Akamai, linkedin, and the company I'm at now (a small startup).

Amusingly (in a sense of not being able to get away from my past fully), I am currently on house arrest (which means I can only leave to go to work, and come home) for being involved in an internet protest a few years ago. I was sentenced to 5 months of house arrest and 7 months of probation which I started serving in January of this year. Aside from that, my life has shaped up pretty well.

That's my rant, some thoughts, some amusing anecdotes, and some musings from my 10 years in torn.

Back to my cave of solitude.

To begin with, if someone could get this in front of Ched, I'd appreciate it, he read either my 5 or 10 year post and commented on it, so I figured another follow up might be neat.

20 years ago today, I started playing Torn.  April 4th 2005 was an interesting and memorable day for me.  I was released from jail at 8:52am, penniless and moving back in with my mother, she and I had a tempestuous relationship and I knew that I was in for a bumpy future.  After spending 452 days, 9 hours and 57 minutes in jail, I was finally back on the streets.   My first day was spent reconnecting with friends, buying some essentials (my mom gave me $200, which was more than she had ever given me in my life until that point...), and then I landed at the library, sitting on aim, getting in touch with friends via AIM, and trying to find a game to play.  I landed on Torn.

It's weird thinking back.  I was 19 at that time, and my head was full of all of the dreams that I wanted to do, all of the places that I wanted to visit and all of the things I wanted to accomplish.  With a few pages of felonies on my record everything seemed so far out of reach.  I ended up working a few dead end retail jobs while desperately trying to get my life back in order.  The first 5 years of my time outside of jail saw me logging into torn more or less every day -- Trying to spin up a set of factions (Torn City Underground - TCU for short) with my buddy (long banned user devoid - 98099), working, and starting to do freelance web design.  My life was a little bit unstructured during this time - I moved in with a girl that I was seeing, but I knew that was going to be a temporary thing.  In 2009 I started going to college to get a degree in comp sci.  This was probably the most interested in Torn I ever was.  I was logging in dozens of times a day, rushing to my phone to dump energy after hopping out of bed with my girlfriend at the time, and just loving all the developments that were coming out.  I don't recall the exact date, but somewhere in the 2007/8 range there was a major crash where Torn was down for a few days.... good times.  I creeped on / befriended one of the Miss Torn finalists named La Senza (she had another name before that...) https://www.torn.com/profiles.php?XID=383710 - She and I became friends off of torn, though as of 2025 we've never met in person we've talked about meeting several times as we've visited eachother's countries, but never quite make it happen.

2010 Saw me at my first internship working with a MASSIVE (in terms of name recognition, web presence, popularity) player in the global information space(Hint: you can't cite it....).   Working with the company I was widely exposed to big data, databased, optimization, CDNs, and all manor of networking.   I got my hands dirty in a datacenter doing some entry level work on servers that were worth about 50x my salary.

2011 Saw me move into my first "real" job.  During my final semester in college I was able to take my last 2 courses as a directed study so I could get a day job in the industry.  I started doing IT Helpdesk as an intern at a company that I had no business getting hired at.  I got lucky.  The hiring manager was in the process of quitting, day drinking heavily, and didn't properly screen me - he never ran a background check on me so he never found out about my criminal past.   This IT job saw me doing all kinds of shitty work, swapping / imaging dozens of drives, doing all of the hacky AD work where I would have to unlock accounts, PW resets, figure out why someone's PDF wouldn't open -- you name it.  That was me.   Working in Boston every day... making really shit money.   I started to automate away some of these tasks (joining devices to the domain, some light security work, etc).  My automation efforts in AutoHotkey were noticed by an adjacent team and I was offered my first full time role in tech, with the wildly inflated title of "Network administrator" (which was very much not at all what I did).  My job was focused almost entirely on network troubleshooting of customer networks where I was completely blind to how they were setup and trying to get company devices that were on-site to call back home.  Decent job, but the responsibilities were pretty nightmarish- cold calling customers about devices and ad-hoc troubleshooting?  Ick.

My love life has always been a mess.  2011 -> 2012 saw me in my second serious relationship, a girl named Britt.  Britt was a streamer and I thought that she was gorgeous.  I had the great misfortune of dating her and realizing that her entire persona (going to college, being chill, being a nerdy gamer) were all fabrications for the audience... She lived with me for a year or two before that fell apart.   It was around this time that I met someone in Torn that would change the trajectory of the remainder of my time playing.   I had more or less quit the game, just logging in to dump my energy / nerve and logging back out - mostly out of habit.   I decided, due to my high (at the time) stats, that I would be a mercenary for hire and join a faction that would pay me handsomely for my services.   I met Medicine (https://www.torn.com/profiles.php?XID=1328613) He was a really cool guy, paid me to be in his faction and intimidate anyone that tried to get into a war with us.  I was friendly with all of the folks in the faction and found my "forever home" in torn.  Over time, he and I played a lot.  His name being medicine was not a coincidence, he had mentioned many times while playing with him that he had a chronic illness.  Towards the time of his last login he mentioned he wasn't doing terribly well, so I'm guessing he passed.

From 2012 -> 2016 was a bit of a mess.  I dated a string of progressively more and more toxic women while focusing most of my time and energy into my career. I saw myself go from my first job to working at a CDN -> A small tech startup which got acquired -> A healthcare company.  I saw myself moved from being an individual contributor -> team leader -> manager -> director without ever really asking.  Apparently my work ethic and intellect set me apart from my peers.... After dating a lot of the wrong people I thought that I had found the right person.   A close friend of mine for several years had fallen for me, and I for her.  After years of being best friends we had an amazing relationship.  I hate to admit it, but that relationship falling apart was more or less my fault. At this point in my life / career I had some major issues that I was struggling to get my arms around.   By the age of 30, I had lived more life than most people would in several lifetimes.  There aren't many people who can talk about being in a stolen car, running an international crime ring, and also being in a board room with a CTO and investors talking about how our departments deliverables looked for the next 6 months.  Nobody knew.   Not a single soul knew the real me, and in spite of all the therapy I could afford, I never figured out a way to stop this malignancy from seeping into my personal relationships.  The girl that was my best friend and I got engaged, I loved the thought of her, but I could never reconcile the idea of a house, a family.... I never had a family growing up.

2017 saw us split, and saw my life spiral out of control for a while.   When she and I split, I left my job.  I lived on tinder and in the beds of women whose name I would never know.  I didn't care about anything, least of all "making money".   Unlike you lot in the UK, this isn't really something we do in the US - just quit a job and come back to our career later on.  I travelled. Excessively.  I packed everything I had that mattered to me into my car and I drove.  From Massachusetts -> New Jersey -> Pennsylvania -> Ohio -> Tennessee -> New Orleans -> Texas -> California -> Oregon -> Washington.   I had a longboard and met a ton of friends along the way.  I spent days driving around trying to feel the pulse of life, nights sleeping in my car, absolutely DECIMATING my savings.   When I got to Washington, I still had plenty of money, but didn't feel any earthly attachment to anything.   I sold my car and the majority of my belongings.  I bought a 1-way ticket to Japan.  A place that I'd always wanted to go.  I was in Tokyo for a little over a month before heading to Korea, China, Thailand... I came back to the US and applied for like... 3 jobs before deciding that I wasn't ready, I f**ked off to Central / South America for a couple of months; Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Brazil.... I was running out of money.   I didn't care.  Finally when it was clear that I either needed to go home or start emptying out retirement accounts, I headed home.  Back to my apartment with absolutely nothing in it.   It had been 9 months since I'd been home.  6 months since I'd had an American phone plan.  I was dead to most of my friends, they had stopped reaching out entirely.

2018 finally saw me get back into the work force.  I joined a company in ad-tech as a senior director.  Business travel saw me all over the world for this job, as we had people in India, China, Poland, the UK, and San Fran working directly for me.  I rarely saw home.  My job was to go to places and help unblock the teams that worked for me.  Destroy any politics or process that were slowing down momentum... and I did it.   I was ruthless.  2018 -> 2020 saw my career hit new heights, but there was still that rebellious kid inside of me yearning to get out.  In 2019 we were acquired by a very large (not quite FAANG, but they compete with those folks) company.  This acquisition left me with more money than I ever imagined I would have.  The acquiring company was also in one of the only verticals that prospered during covid... so the MASSIVE HEAP of RSUs that I was granted went up about 4-5x during the pandemic and I sold more or less right at the top.

The pandemic hit the reset button on my life again.  I was 34 when it hit, a gym rat with no idea what he wanted out of life.  I started dating maybe the only girl that was ever both good for me, and good to me.   I started to settle into my life a bit more.  2020 - > 2023 saw things normalize and calm down.   I left my job in ad-tech to move back into another fast paced startup.  This time in a completely different vertical.  I am still there today.  I am a department head that reports in to the CEO, and the company is doing well. I split from the girl I was seeing in 2023 since her commitment wasn't where I wanted it to be.

So that brings us up to today.  I'm 39 now.  Torn has been a part of my life daily, or multiple times daily, for the past 20 years.  These days my account is in a mostly steady state, login, do some crimes, maybe join some OC, gym train, logout.  During the past 20 years I've amassed a pretty decent networth, and have no real goals.  I have hit level 100 on all of the crime 2.0 crimes, and have somewhat respectable battle stats (for someone who hasn't really done Xanax in the past ~7 or 8 years).  My current level is 99 and some change, though I'm holding at 98, I figured I would probably push to 100 by now just to say I did it for this post, but I got a bit complacent.

These days, life sees me working, rock climbing (v3/v4, pulling on some V5s but not sending them with any decent beta / reliably) and still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.

I know that this is a rambly post that's gone a whole lot of nowhere, but it's difficult to sum up 20 years in several paragraphs. It's weird to think about how one day, 20 years ago, I was in a library and starting to play this game.... a young man, now one with gray hair.  I'm alright, but I've got a long way to go.

Thanks George for giving me something to do for more than half my life.  If I'm ever out in the UK again maybe I'll buy you a pint.

Cheers,

Hello everyone and welcome to my every-few-years post about my life and how it's changed since I started playing torn.

For those of you that don't know me, I started playing torn the day that I got out of jail in 2005. Since that time I have been trying my best to make a life for myself out here in the "real world". Prior to going to jail I was stealing cars, breaking into homes and businesses, and I apparently ran a large (for the time) international credit card theft ring. I was 18 at the time, and ended up spending 15 months in jail on a 2.5 year sentence. In the event that you want to read much more about it -- there's a post from about ~3 years ago over here: https://www.torn.com/forums.php#!p=treads&f=16&t=15936821&b=0&a=0

So why the cause for this post? Well on Thursday I was offered a job, at a startup to be the manager / tech lead of a team of penetration testers. My group will be legally hacking into different companies, providing guidance into how we accomplished the task, and how to better secure their networks.

My background goes something like this:

2000-2003, age 15 - 18, spending a lot of time online and learning to code in C. I created lots of stupid websites in Html / Php, but I was generally a shit coder who understood how to SQL inject / break form validation really well.

2004 (Jan)-2005 (april) -- Age 18 - 19, Jail

2005 - 2006 - age 19 - 21, Working retail to make ends meet.

2006 - 2008 - Age 21 - 24, Freelance web design between Boston and California (living in Both)

2008 - 2011 - Age 24 - 27, College, freelance web design

2011 - 2012 - Age 27, Worked for an alternative energy company, doing development and networking work

2012 - 2013 - Age 27 - 28, Worked for Wikimedia foundation doing development / helping to shard / scale databases.

2013 - 2014 - Age 28 - 29, Worked for Akamai doing network security work (Ccare - Sectec group -- managed Kona, rules division)

2014 - 2016 - Age 29 - 31, Worked for a startup doing development work

2016 - 2017 - Age 31 - 32, Worked for a healthcare company that provided a SaaS product to our customers, doing Development / bug fixing as well as team leadership.

1/2/2018 -- Back to being a hacker.

Just thought I'd share as I'm pretty stoked to be getting back to my root...s

Cheers,

Getting a job as a programmer is much much much more about what you can do as a programmer than what your degree is in. I hired a few people at my last job that didn't have a degree at all -- because I know two things. 1. That person WANTS to be a developer. 2. They are driven as hell. They might have some weird gaps in knowledge, but they at least know how to code a program from start to finish.

I get college kids in all the time, I schedule them for a 4 hour interview, 1 hour with a team member, 2 hours with me, 1 hour with my manager if they pass my interview. The interview with me is: "Hey, you have two hours, show me how you'd make blackjack." If they can't do it -- they don't get the job. It just needs to be a simple command line app that runs in the terminal that someone can play a single hand.

Now if they want to get fancy they can implement money, win/loss streaks, double down, insurance, 5 card monty, etc.

In general my pass / fail is:

1. How many times did they get stuck

2. What was their thought process when they got stuck.

Build stuff, put it on github, bring portfolio to employers.

I don't know if I would consider this to be a life dream -- it's just sort of something that I've always been decent with -- and listen I'm no Ian beers or George Hotz, but I know my way around netsec pretty well.

Anyways, it's not too hard to learn -- slap down $50 and take a course on pluralsight that goes into how to use Kali and the steps in how to enumerate / compromise a network, and how to fix it. Drop another $50 on a CEHv9 book, then either start as an associate somewhere or drop another $400 on a CEH training that you... probably won't need -- and then take the CEH exam. At that point you can go earn 80-100k a year. Good to go.

So, Ched built torn, and I believe he (or maybe Clansy) was the person who dreamed up Mr. / Ms. Torn. Well, years and years ago, a girl participated in the Miss / Mrs Torn competition and I messaged her very early on in the competition before she was voted very highly and told her that she was beautiful. We exchanged pictures and talked a few times on Skype. She had a boyfriend so we were just friends for a while. I got into a couple of relationships, and she stayed in hers until like 2014? We talked once in a while. There was also an ocean in between us... So some planning was in order. All the pieces came into line this year. We met up in London but ended up back at her place in Cambridge and... yeah, 4 days later I was back in the US with a smile on my face =P

The techniques we use to penetrate a system are similar to those used by a black hat hacker, but without the ill intentions. Our clients sign a pretty air-tight terms of service agreeing that they are allowing someone to hack their system and while we're pretty certain that we know what we're doing, mistakes happen and we'll work with their sysadmins to help diagnose / fix any problems that we introduce in our pen testing.

So a normal pen-test will start with some fairly low impact tools, port scans, network mapping software, and just intercepting traffic with something like a network pineapple (https://www.wifipineapple.com/ ) / hacking their wifi password and starting to intercept traffic. Beyond that we move to 0-day exploits that aren't weaponized. These can be anything from hardware to network based attacks. Got a printer that connects to the internet -- if someone found a way to connect to that due to some silly online print function that the vendor left open (or sysadmin misconfigured / had one executive that wanted to use it once a year...) and boom, we're in. Now we can start to execute commands inside the network and build out a map of what servers are running which services. Assuming that doesn't work, maybe we'll run a generic metasploit scan and see if we can find anything open there. Just keep finding as much information as we can and building from there. We also have to check their websites for similar vulnerabilities, xss, sql injection, session hijacking, etc. etc. etc.

Assuming we can't find any way in using 0-days, we move to more traditional stuff like social engineering, keyboard surfing, hardware based attacks (walk by an unlocked computer and insert a flash drive for ~15 seconds and let the auto-installer run to toss a network based keylogger into their system). Beyond that we have a team with an... interesting background. I'm probably the most senior / diverse of the team, but we have a few younger guys (I'm 32, they're all in their 20's) that have a ton of potential. Our engineering department has a few really strong folks in it also.

Pen testers exist in a space of "we're trying to help but sometimes things go wrong". Working as an independent contractor after Akamai I hacked into a network printer and didn't fully read the documentation on how it worked, and I had managed to get access to what appeared to be a shell. I was typing in some commands (ls, du, etc. etc.) and It just wasn't doing what I wanted it to -- wasn't returning data properly. I tried to do a few different things (exit, ctrl ^c, ctrl + x) and hitting enter after each. Apparently I ended up printing like 68 pages of just random 1-line commands at the office before realizing that my shell was apparently directly feeding to the print spooling process (on a related note, the person who wrote the exploit didn't mention that was the vector / how to escape from it, so I was only like 1/10th at fault). Shit happens. I wasn't in trouble, but the people who came in to my "target" office the next morning were VERY confused / worried.

The first time I posted one of these things talking about how I started playing torn, way back in 2007, Ched commented on it and said it was a good read, so I'm going to assume that it's at least a little bit interesting. As for him taking credit -- I'm not sure that he would take much -- but he can definitely say that:

1. He knows where I've been nearly ever day (with the exception of about 3 weeks this year when I was without internet while traveling in Central America) for the last ~12 years and

2. He has gotten me laid....

Miss torn .... 2007? 2008? 2009? I forget which year -- hooked up a few months back. So that was pretty rad.
