I’ve been working on a gym comparison tool that uses Vladar’s formulas to show how different training regimes play out over time. It basically lets you compare things like 2 vs 3 Xanax vs happy jumps vs refills vs company benefits, and see the long-term stat impact in a simple graph.
This isn’t meant to replace guides about what you should do — it’s more of a visual way to show why certain training regimes are good, and to help people make informed decisions (e.g. is a full Happy Island worth the cost for my stats? how much does being a donator actually matter? how big is the gap between 2 x Xanax and 3× Xanax? When should I stop eDvD jumps for my stats / circumstances).
I looked around and couldn’t find anything that does long-term comparisons like this while also considering gyms, stats, perks, etc. I’ve used Omanpx’s estimator and a few spreadsheets to validate things while building this, and I’m still refining the calculator, but the results are already looking solid.
Below are a few examples of what it shows (still in testing, so small tweaks are ongoing):
Why it's important for new players to be a donator (stat gain comparison over 1 year)
Why it's important to get a PI (but maybe getting a full happy island is less important)
Why it's important to use 3x xanax and point refill daily:
Why the advice is that new players should work at a music shop for the gym experience
Why people reocmmend stopping 5x eDvD jumps at 140k per stat:
The tool is here (still in beta, but very usable) : Gym Comparison
API key is optional — you can enter stats manually if you prefer. I only use it to grab your stats / information and don't save it anywhere except your local storage so you don't have to re enter it.
Also, if you write guides, feel free to use any of the charts — a small credit is appreciated but not required. I'll be happy to grab a graph to show what you need if you send me the requirements.
If you spot weird results or have ideas for improvements, feel free to shout. A couple people have already helped confirm some parts, and feedback has been appreciated.
I wrote a temporary script to send the stock information to yata and to show the profit in the travel store. It would be great if people who fly can install it so we can at least get some stock. Please send it to your factions and friends as well - the more people we can get the more accurate it will be.
Really happy with the pfp that wolvywoolf created for me. They took my requirements and created something that is absolutely perfect. The price was very reasonable as well. Thank you!
TornTools has now restored foreign stock syncing, so I’ve updated this script to disable all uploads and keep only the local profit display in the travel shop.
No data is sent anywhere anymore, it’s now purely a UI helper. This will also be disabled once it’s no longer needed.
Thanks to everyone who helped keep stock data flowing while things were broken, and to the TornTools developers for providing a fix so quickly!
I think it’s great that two people independently jumped in to help when things broke 🙂Torn is very community-driven, and having some redundancy for a short period of time is not a bad thing at all.
That said, I’d personally be a bit cautious about permanently replacing or splitting functionality that is in TornTools.
The foreign stock data is one of those features that only becomes genuinely useful when a lot of people are contributing to it. If it lives inside a larger system that most players already use stock updates will naturally be frequent and the data stays accurate. If it lives in a small standalone script that only the most interested users install stock updates will tend to be more sporadic which hurts the usefulness of the data.
There’s also a bit of a user-experience angle: having multiple scripts doing overlapping things can be confusing, especially when something breaks and users aren’t sure who to contact or which script is responsible. We already saw it here a bit when users assumed it was yata that was broken.
