What if a player holds a grudge against a staff member because of something that happened previously, and months later decides to attack them as a form of revenge related to their moderation actions?
How would you determine whether that attack was random or intentionally motivated by disagreement with the staff member’s actions?
In my opinion, staff members should be treated exactly the same as regular players in these situations. Players should not face additional punishment simply because the person involved happens to be staff.
Based on what you are saying, it seems that future player-versus-staff incidents would be judged subjectively. Most likely, the player would end up being punished for attacking a staff member, even though the same action would not result in punishment if it were done to another player.
I honestly don’t think this makes sense, especially when the reasoning seems to be based on the assumption that third-party casinos are inherently exploitative or that they are somehow more problematic than what already exists within Torn.
Why ban them outright? There are plenty of reputable third-party casinos that have been running for a long time and have built trust within the gambling community. If the concern is scams or exploitation, then surely the focus should be on the individual sites that actually scam or exploit people, rather than treating every third-party casino as a problem because a few bad apples exist.
And if we’re talking about exploitation, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Torn already has its own casino, which can be far more exploitative by design. So I don’t really understand why third-party casinos are suddenly being treated as the issue while plenty of other scams and questionable services within Torn aren’t punishable in the same way.
I also don’t think the argument that Torn might become a “platform for advertising these kinds of services” is enough on its own to justify banning them. If the problem is excessive advertising, regulate the advertising. If the problem is scams, punish the scammers. If the problem is compliance, explain specifically what compliance risk these sites create.
There are also much bigger issues when it comes to third-party tools that can directly affect the competitive integrity of Torn. There are scripts that allow people to queue up pushes or stack attacks on players, automatically send a set number of people into specific fights, and in some cases even initiate the attack for you. Then you have the amount of API scraping and automation that can provide huge advantages to people who have access to these tools.
Those are the kinds of things I would consider far more concerning because they can directly affect gameplay and give certain players an advantage that others simply don’t have. The competitive spirit of Torn should be something worth protecting.
If the goal is to protect the game and its players, I think the focus should be on identifying and dealing with illegal or borderline-illegal scripts, automation, and tools that undermine fair competition, rather than banning legitimate third-party services simply because some of them happen to be casinos.
I’m not against protecting Torn players from scams, but I think there needs to be a much clearer distinction between legitimate third-party services and outright scams before an entire category gets banned.
And I’m especially curious about what specifically makes these third-party casinos “legitimately exploitative.” Is there actual evidence of widespread exploitation from these services, or is this mainly a precaution based on the possibility that it could happen?
Banning an entire category because some of them might be problematic seems like a pretty broad solution to a much narrower problem.
