I think that will depend on the environmental conditions. Since light is  much faster than sound and does not need a medium to transmit through (in a vacuum), this might be a good option for light in the vacuum of space. However, if you were to have a thick, dense atmosphere (i.e., dust, heavy cloud cover) then there are certainly many ways in which sound may be able to travel better than light; or possibly even better than any form of signal using chemicals. As far as a race of intelligent beings who communicate over large distances in open space go, I would guess they use some form of electromagnetic energy - using either visual light, lasers, etc. to communicate with each other. So, evolution always selects that mode of communication which can best convey information within their particular environment; therefore, I do not believe that there is one 'optimal' means by which to communicate

I don't think we are ready to state with confidence that there is a "universe" within our universe based on information I have gathered so far. The idea that this could potentially exist has got to be in my mind one of the most fascinating possibilities. classical general relativity tells us that the universe will end as a singularity, however many people who study physics feel that general relativity may stop working at this point before telling us what really does exist. Therefore whatever exists past the point of singularity, will depend upon a consistent theory of quantum gravity. We currently do not have such a theory. If I were forced to select one possible existence for what lies past the singularity I would want to think that it is greater than an infinite point - whether it is another universe, a new universe (baby), or some other form of spacetime geometry. I am hopeful because I think that it is a much better and more exciting possibility than simply ending at an infinite point.

Theoretical Physics (and probably specifically General Relativity and Quantum Field Theory) is likely my "true calling". I enjoy that the mathematical structure is not merely an instrument for describing reality, but it IS in fact a language. There is something very gratifying as well about developing a Lagrangian and then finding how all of the fundamental physical phenomena emerge from a relatively small number of basic ideas. I have been working on attempting to better learn Tensor Calculus and Gauge Theory. While this has been quite humbling; it does become rewarding as concepts begin to fall into place. It is also a field where the farther down you dig; the greater your realization will be, that there is still so much yet to discover.
