Be active in wars.  War opponents give a 2x respect bonus. 

And to your original question, also wars. If the war goes very wrong and the expenses are sky high, you should still able to get ~300-500k per war hit. (~12-20m for 40 hits)

Now, how your faction pays is their rules. I can't control that.

The past one or two weeks some of our factionmates have been getting OD's up and down. We even joked about the recent batch being made in hell.

You can still buy armor and/or weapons abroad and they will still work. Except ranged weapons since you also leave the ammo at home.
