She's never steered me wrong yet.
Met one of the D-Day vets, in a small town called Alnwick in Northumberland. He was a landing craft gunner. His LCT did 25 trips to Sword Beach.
He was 17 at the time. Enlisted in the Royal Navy at 16.
It was only later when the local newspaper did a spread on WWII surviors that I found out his whole story.
As a serviceman myself I was totally humbled after reading his story, he never spoke about it in the unit bar never bragged. He just sat quietly.
Some of our younger members asked him about it. All he said was "I only did my part".
He unfortunately passed a few years later.
All of our Grandfathers and Grandmothers in the UK lived through the war. We all know the names of the Generals, the politicians both ours and the enemys.
But it wasn't just them who won the war. It was everyone who did their own part that contributed to it.
That's why we still regard those men and women as our Greatest Generation. And we should never forget them.
