Hey all!
I’ve start playing for a little over 2 weeks now and recently reached level 15. I’ve been reading a lot of material (mostly forum posts), and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how nice the community is, putting so much effort into learning resources and helping new players.
With that said, I have some questions that I couldn’t really find the answer for, so hopefully some of you will be able to help me. I will dump a lot of questions here, but I’d encourage you to reply even if you only have the answer (or only feel like answering) one of them. I’ve numbered the questions to make it easier to answer. Thanks!
1 - Now that I’ve reached level 15, should I always (as in 99% of game time) be traveling (basically just looping Torn City -> Fly -> buy plushies/flowers -> Torn City -> Sell)?
2 - I’ve seen everyone talking about how the game really starts when you hit level 15, and that with traveling you’ll be able to make all this money. I think I must be missing something, because the numbers simply don’t add up to me. Let’s assume I’m making 150k$/hr flying and I fly 12hrs/day, for a total of 1.8M$/day. More than half of that goes to the rent of a PI! If you account for upkeep, rehab and other expenses, the leftover is not even enough for a Xanax.
3 - Should I follow a travel sequence (ensuring I travel 50 times to all the places) or just travel where I can profit the most?
4 - How am I supposed to use the tools that check for stock abroad effectively? I'm assuming it's always a rough estimation, knowing wether a certain item will be available or not?
5 - This sounds like a stupid question but how do you handle sleeping IRL? It seems to me that I should be in Torn City (so that I don’t get mugged overnight) so I can’t really make use of “travel hours” (unless I’m returning to Torn City ig) but most importantly, I’ll definitely be wasting energy, crime and cooldowns. Do you just accept that you can’t be 100% efficient? Or are there ways around this (where you don’t wake up in the middle of the night and make Torn the center of your life).
6 - When should I start jumping (as in choco/happy jumping)? Seems to me that gym progression is based on the amount of E used and by jumping I will delay my progress on unlocking new gyms.
7 - Should I jump with an empty energy bar and 4 xan or full one and 3 xan? I’ve seen both being advised.
8 - Should I only train with jumps? Should I jump every day? (I know that after a certain amount of total stats it becomes more efficient to train without jumps, but I’m very far from that)
9 - How the hell do people afford happy jumps (non choco)? EDVDs are so expensive and it seems that with flying being the number one money making method it’s just impossible.
10 - In gym training forum posts I often see people mentioning that I should use the correct gym for the stat. What does that mean in practice? If a gym specializes in one stat should I only train that stat? Should I change gyms every time I want to train a stat (to the specific gym that benefits that stat the most?) Should I always train in the gym that allows for the highest growth of any stat? What mental model do you use, do you see the gyms you have available and choose which stat to train based on that, or you start from the stat you want to train and choose the most appropriate gym? Any downsides to switching gyms?
11 - I’m very scared of rehab costs. It feels like it’s one of the only mechanics in the game where it’s possible to make irreversible suboptimal decisions. I know that the optimal strategy here is to do 1 less rehabs than the total you’d need to go back to 0 AP. Does this assumes I'm actively jumping? Should I actively be rehabbing if I’m actively jumping?
12 - When should I go to rehab? This guide that seems to be one of the most popular rehab guides, recommends new players to rehab the moment slight addiction kicks in. Why is that? I would think that I should try to rehab as late as possible (before getting expelled from education for example), to minimize the amount of times I’m traveling to Switzerland (and therefore not traveling anywhere else)
13 - Why do Big Box of Chocolate Bars cost more than Bag of Candy Kisses? This is one example, but I often find other items that are priced very weirdly (when comparing to items of the same category that give a strictly better outcome for cheaper)
14 - At what point does is it worth it to buy a PI?
I've gotten a few items (Smelly Cheese, Bottle Cap, ...), that according to the wiki, have no use outside of being sold.
I see that they sell on the Item Market for some money (not a lot, but still). Why are people buying them? Am I missing something? Should I keep them?

Yes it matter a lot. There are a lot of strategies (know as "jumps") in the game that revolve around maximizing your happiness (you can even temporarily push it towards the maximum you see on your bar) and training in the gym. You'll find many tutorials for those.
If you want to see exactly how much happiness impacts gym gains I'd recommend reading this thread
