Setting up for success
First of all, we're going to need to be living in a private island with an airstrip. This will cost a chunk, but if you're checking in regularly and flying consistently you can make back more than the rental costs ESPECIALLY when your spouse is also flying using the same property. The reason we need the PI and airstrip is because it removes the fee for flying and adds an extra ten slots for items you can bring home, as well as cuts down some of the travel time which is a huge efficiency boost. Without the fee waived and the extra capacity, it's going to be hard to make any profits travelling.
If you're struggling to find any suitable PIs on the rental market, you can use the fallback option of messaging the player 'kontamusse' and asking about his PIs. He does a rent-to-own scheme which is quite expensive early and not ideal for a player trying to train their stats efficiently (you'll be missing out on a huge amount of base happiness for a long time) BUT may be a decent avenue to take later in your Torn career; what we're really after is his 600k / day rental of a basic PI (2000 happy) with an airstrip - all you need to do is hire a pilot for 30k daily upkeep. This is a PERFECT starting point to kick off your economy!
Flying
So, what do we actually do with flying? Well, I like to keep either a 'properties' or 'travel agency' tab in my side bar for quick access (you can mess with this in your settings), then via either of those you can access the flight menu and choose a destination. Early on, you absolutely want to keep to the first set of destinations - Mexico, Cayman Islands, and Canada. These are the shortest three trips, and will be a good idea for while you're getting used to flying.
Let's do an example flight..
- First, make sure you check the wiki or a reference sheet / TornPDA so make sure you're carrying enough cash - for Cayman we're going to want 15 x $4,000 as our most expensive target (the Banana Orchid flower) is $4,000 per unit, so we'll carry $65,000 for the first trip just in case we miss our landing time and get mugged for a little over 5% of our wallet total. Can't hurt to be cautious.
- Now, we're going to go to the travel agency and select Cayman Islands, hit travel and confirm. We'll be taken to the flight screen and it'll show a progress bar and a timer for how long we have left. Unless you're a time savant, PLEASE set a timer for a minute or two before we land! Nothing sucks more than coming 30 seconds too late and seeing you're in hospital from a mugger.
- We've landed! We now have a shop inventory list in front of us, much like at the Torn city shops, and we have 15 seconds of immunity until we're a mugging target. The top section of the stock list will be knickknacks including our two targets for this location - first we'll look for the Stingray plushie towards the bottom of this first section of the shop list. If they're in stock we'll snatch up as many as we can carry and then hit 'travel home' and the top right above everything else on the page that isn't the game's UI. If the plushies are sold out, we'll look right at the top for Banana Orchid flowers, fill up with those and travel home. Still no luck? We have a backup target further down the list, and that's the Trout in the weapons section. This one we'll likely have to sell on the market and risk a mugging, but if we're flying a lot we can likely avoid that since you're unreachable in the sky.
- Well, that's it! We're heading home, you'll see the bar and timer again and can set yourself another timer for when you land if you want to be ultra efficient, or just work out roughly what time you'll need to come back and hop on another flight. Just remember to use your energy and nerve between flights (unless you're letting your energy fully fill for a big candy train of course, just try to time it so you don't miss out on your natural regen time).
Selling
So we have some stock to sell, but the item market is a rough place and we'd rather not lose profits to sales tax and muggers. Luckily, there are plenty of traders out there with a reputation to uphold, so you won't face a mugging if you sell to them. Find someone you think has acceptable prices and send them a message before setting up a trade and adding your gear. For ease, we're going to use 'kontamusse', who we mentioned earlier. We know that we can make a profit of $4,200 each on Stingray Plushies or $3,500 each on Banana Orchids when selling to him. With an inventory of 15 that's $63,000 or $52,500 profit for about 50 minutes of travelling.
*Since writing this guide I have become a trader myself, so while you're getting started feel free to sell to me and then if you find someone else you'd rather use as your trader that is absolutely fine, I'll be sad to see you go but understand the desire to maximise profits or support a friend!
Want to carry more?
We can increase our capacity by three by buying a large suitcase for $10M in Hawaii (or more on the item market), veteran players don't recommend we bother with a small or medium suitcase to bridge the gap, but if you reeeaaally want to we're probably better getting one of those from the item market as they sell for less than the initial buy price in Hawaii. Another even better way to bump up our capacity is by joining a faction with travel capacity perks, typically factions will list this along with any crime, steadfast, and toleration perks in their bio.
Travel locations aren't all JUST shops
There are a couple of destinations with extra tabs in the side bar, like Switzerland with the Rehabilitation tab and South Africa with the Hunting tab. Rehab is where you'll want to go if you overdose on a drug that then removes all of your happiness - a session at rehab will recover that for you at a cost of $250K. It will also decrease your addiction level, which will have negative effects on your efficiency at your job and get you in trouble with the player in charge / get you fired from your City job eventually.
That's about all there is to it! I'd highly recommend you utilise TornPDA on your phone to check item stock rotation for the countries you're thinking of flying to, so you can make sure you're in with a good shot at hitting the items you want. It's the orange circular icon with the box in it, and the list can be filtered by country and by categories of items available. You can also see what each item will cost as a quick reference point for how much to fly with. If you're not having a great time with the app, check out TornCityTim on youtube for a visual guide on travelling and using PDA to enhance your gameplay.
I'll add at the bottom here a quick list of target items for each destination and what they'll cost and earn you, and then my own personal reference sheet (using my max capacity of 24), just in case that's useful too.
