Every time I hear two people talk about politics, it always ends up being a left vs right, woke leftie vs super nazi argument that leaves both people bitter and angry. We all want to better our countries and the world, be happy, and enjoy life, do we not all share these goals? How are we enemies?
I'm willing to bet at least 90% of people aren't psychopaths or narcissists, so most of us share human empathy and want to help others to at least some degree. Calling people bigots, nazis, slurs, whatever else is also really not a great way of convincing someone that your way is better.

I go to an Australian university, and we have plenty of international students over here on temporary visas, a bunch of whom come from China. From what I hear, many try and stay in Australia after they graduate since they don't want to go back to an oppressive government. Can't say it's exactly the sign of a country which embraces freedom of political speech. There is a reason so many Chinese citizens don't go to their own universities.
I mean, I can't think of a law that it would break, since it is similar to an election promise such as the cost of living relief from Covid. That being said, the moral side of this is pretty crazy, just throwing around cash on the condition that your party holds a majority is quite the idea.
Edit: Specifically, since every US citizen, regardless of whether they voted/who they voted for, will receive the payment, is why I don't believe this would be illegal
We really ended up arguing over grammar, vocabulary, and Trump . . . in a post talking about political divide. God bless P&L, for we certainly have not.
Then again, why am I surprised that a piece of shit likes this forum stinks?
A 3:2 ratio for homicides is definitely not great, as I mentioned above. Definitely shows that there are extremes on both sides. That being said, most people are moderate, and can work together.
When you say "Australia seems to be following in the US's footsteps politically at the moment" is the problem that there are too many people advocating for the end of the Israeli genocide of Palestinians? Or do you mean there's a LOT more right wing fascists running for office?
Because when you say "although the left has some isolated cases" what I hear is "I can't think of any cases of the left being violent that is ini any comparable to the right".
Is what I was mentioning, looking back I probably could've worded it better than "words in my mouth", my bad.
Feels like you are trying to state that I'm trying to hold a stance on the left that I can't hold, rather than assuming that I just can't be bothered to back up every small claim. Seems like your assumptions towards me are quite bias to your political stance. That's what I was trying to say
Duran (2023) is a good read for this, although it is a closed paper. Page 42 shows a total of 42 left wing homicides, and 227 far-right homicides in between 1990 and 2020 in the US. During Trump's first term, it was 17:25. It wouldn't be the worst extrapolation to assume a similar pattern in the second term. Freilich et al. (2024) cites this text and mentions similar numbers if you can't access the first one, although it doesn't mention the 2017-2020 spike.
Also yes, the bombing was far-right, it was thrown into a crowd of people protesting Australia Day/Invasion Day. I do think it reflects the overall political climate, however. A couple of people I care about were in that crowd, so it rattled me to say the least.
Also, as I mentioned, you gotta stop trying to put words in my mouth, it isn't a good look <3
Yeah uhh, I literally said that right wing extremists tend to be more violent, although the left has some isolated cases. To your credit, right wing violence is more organised. The point I'm trying to make though is that these are extremes, and we should love and respect everyone in the middle, rather than breaking down into tribalism and just being overall miserable.
To be more specific, I believe in Australia people are starting to get pushed to the extremes of politics. Not too long ago we had a bomb thrown into a protest at my home city (thankfully the guy who made it was an idiot and it didn't detonate). It reminds me a lot of the political climate in the US.
Also please don't put words in my mouth, I wouldn't do that to you <3
Reading comprehension may be dead, crazy considering we are in a text based game. I said I don't agree with it at all, and I believe it's a whackjob election promise that should definitely be condemned. I'm more so looking at the legal side of it. As I said, I'm not an American lawyer, so it's mostly speculation on my end.
You called someone a retard 3 hours ago 😭
No way people are going at each other's throats over THIS post, P&L holds a different species of people, I swear. The jokes write themselves.
Also, I think both sides can point to the extremes, there are definitely Nazis and white supremacists in right wing groups, but left wingers also tend to have real wackjobs, albeit less violent ones. Most people you will see everyday are not these people. I hate nazis and I hate left wingers who ostracise everyone who disagrees with them, but most people who fall in between are alright.
Main reason I'm thinking of this is that Australia seems to be following in the US's footsteps politically at the moment, and I'd hate to see my fellow Australians fall into the same trap.

3* company at least, I beg

Hard to differ this from an election promise. Politicians promise stuff like tax breaks, pension increases, etc all the time to push swing demographics in their favour. Only difference is that this has just dropped the pretext of being an actually good policy.
Also, I'm definitely not in support of this. I'm Australian, and every time I check in to see how the US is doing, my jaw drops a little more. I also study Australian law, not US law, so take what I say with a grain of salt as well.

Interesting read, article suggests that conservatives (on average) feel less empathy, willingness to help, etc. That being said, both groups showed a pretty large drop for empathy towards outgroups (others side of the political compass), effectively making both sides equally bigoted against each other, a poetic conclusion if you ask me.
imo the "lack of empathy" could easily be attributed to right leaning people being more individual, in the sense they don't expect to receive or give help, so take it with a grain of salt.
What on earth is going on in the US? The rallies that the political parties have really reminds me of those mega churches that have the priests flying across the halls and what not. Democrats and Republicans alike, although the MAGA rallies seem to have a bit more "flair" about them. I'm pretty sure if the Australian Prime Minister tried this he would be laughed offstage.
Also, no way that 5k gets paid out, I'd bet good money on that.
