In my perspective, I think the symbols are literal in a sense that it's an eye looking through a telescope gazing upon a star. Perhaps it's a image, video or a thought they kept.
(Oh dear, I appear to be out of time. Where does time even go?)
Perhaps you were thinking of the stars and how supernova or whatever cosmic things. As you thought of it, you think of it, time flows as events continues on and on with or without you.
Also, If a galaxy is 10 million light-years away, its light takes 10 million years to reach our eye. This means that they had already ended and uttering their final moments, wondering where time goes, and we are from far away only receiving this just now.
