i posted this before but accidentally graveyarded your old thread, LOL:

when you start, use the rule of thirds, think about placement of render and the make dimensions appropriate
The light source should go behind the render (notalways), most times it gives it better depth perception
try not to use go overkill with the blurring/sharp smudge unless for added depth /smudge sigs
(use gaussian if you need to outline the focal pt)
Find a colour palette for each piece, instead of overusing gradient maps etc
the textures/brushes should be used lightly , over saturation makes it an eye sore
blend the render using fractals /c4ds away from the light source which helps the sig/LA flow better
