So earlier this week I was sat here working when I noticed an email - sent from a name I hadn't seen in a long time, but one that I recognised as a friend: George from Torn!
The email was a summary of my 14 year old account's status, on the anniversary of my 6th year of inactivity - A jarring reminder of my decision many moons past to "stop logging in for a little bit, just until work stabilizes", which somehow led me into pretty much forgetting that this world even existed over the past half-decade.
So I figured I'd reset my password and stick my head in the door to see how things are looking, and it would seem that sadly my old community of friends is now just a list of dusty "last login xxxx days ago" tombstones. I figure I'll stick around for a while and see how the city feels. So here I am, trying to re-learn my way in this new colourful city; what with it's 'Dark Mode' UI, multiple loadouts, colour-coded event log, and all manner of other QoL changes and overhauls. (Back in my day the newspaper was just text, the items page had no images, and I thought I was the richest guy in town when I sold a Cesium for 3 mil)
After reviewing my post-ressurection events, stored funds, item inventory, stats, and properties; I believe I have significantly more resources at my disposal than most truly "new" players, (though no doubt significantly less than many of those who have joined and prospered while I slumbered) but I am still challenged by a simple lack of wisdom on how best to make use of what I have. Many elements of my memories are from before major overhauls and updates that took place before my absence, and many more overhauls and updates have no doubt come and gone since. It would seem my main challenge is just trying to work out which parts of the stuff I remember remain relevant to modern Torn, which parts of modern Torn ring any kind of bell amongst the stuff I remember, and what else has happened that I won't remember and need to go and learn from scratch.
I've been through dozens of pages of the most popular forum posts and guides, and it seems like most things are still more or less the same in a broad sense of the general gameplay loop, but it's surely going to take me a while to re-learn all the ins and outs and dial in my understanding of the modern economy, training routines, stat/weapon meta, and social structures.
While I get back up to speed, I have many many questions. I'm still going through a LOT of forum posts so it's possible that some of these questions already have good answers out there. But any input to point me in the right direction on some of these points would be tremendously cool. Although going into this I assume many of these points could still be just as nebulous as they used to be and might not have easily quantifiable answers, which is fine, obviously.
Questions:
1. Is there an existing post somewhere with a glossary for all the acronyms unique to Torn? I keep stumbling across them peppered throughout other guides and posts. 90% of the time it's something I'm familiar with from years back and I'll remember the meaning before long, but if there's a one-stop-shop out there where I can refresh my memory on all of them (and learn any new ones) that'd be super handy.
2. I assume IRC is dead now and all the chat is on Discord? Or is the chat community all using Global chat now? Many advice posts imply that global chat is akin to some sort of radioactive wasteland full of marauding barbarians who want to scalp me and eat my flesh. So are there other in-game chat channels too? Where can I find the community?
3. My old friends and I ran a faction together, and over the years I performed pretty much every role at some time or another. Now that everyone else is inactive I've inherited the Leader role once more... Is this faction still something I should consider an asset, or are they a dime a dozen now? It's got a bunch of upgrades and stuff, and it looks like the updates to faction warring mean that I'm not getting farmed for respect. - On the one hand; obviously staying here is going to prevent me joining a new group where I could find a good social crowd to get back into the swing of things and ask all my born-again-noob questions. - But on the other hand; I liked my old friends, and if I stay here they'll at least know where to find me if they ever return.
4. Is subscribing still key to staying competitive? Or are there sufficient trading/earning options out there for a significant portion of players to afford regular donator packs?
5. Are there any kind of references for optimal combat stat ratios? Seems like combat has been significantly overhauled. - And on a related note; any sort of ballpark figures for what is considered poor/average/strong for specific stats or total stats relative to level, rank, or age?
6. Similarly, is there any sort of loadout meta I should consider? Before I left it seemed that Enfield + BT-MP9 + Macana was the common loadout considered 'standard-issue' in the armoury. It seems like now there's more versatility in which weapons can be equipped into which slots. I'm also starting to read guide posts on weapon mods which is a completely new thing to me. Guides explain what each mod does, but where do I get them, and should this be a priority for me to enhance my equipment?
7. Companies and employment. I have another tab open on my "posts to read" with an overview of what the perks are for various different companies, but just in terms of managing my expectations; when I used to play your role in a company required nothing from you beyond having good working stats. Is that still the case, or can employees do anything to more directly contribute to the success of their company?
8. Similar to my conbat stats question, are there common hiring criteria for what gets considered as good or bad working stats, and good or bad benefits/salaries for different stat milestones?
9. I tried out poker in the casino but nothing happened and there's no longer a list of tables with different stakes. Is poker dead now?
I'll probably come up with more questions later. But this is starting to feel like a super long post and hopefully question 2 will point me toward chat channels for shorter questions in future.
So I'm a returning player who came back to Torn a couple of months ago after a 6+ year absence. I've been reading up on the modern battle stat ratio recommendations and training guides, and it seems like the most sensible thing for me to do right now is aim to get all stats up to the 50m cap and then continue def whoring from there.
My def is already 100m+ so I can leave that alone and just work the other three. However, my dex is absolutely puny. Like 0.03% of my total. So that's the stat where I've got the most work to do.
My question is: What should I do with my 100+ refills and various stockpiled drugs/boosters? Use them now to train my crappy dex as quickly as possible, or save them for later once I'm back to def whoring for maximum gains? Or use them in the middle with i'm trying to train str and spd from 10m to 50m each?
If i stock up on DVDs and do max happy jumps to train my dex and burn through refills doing that... what sort of gains will I see if I'm starting with like 40k dex? Is it even worth doing or will my refills and drugs be wasted training such a low stat? I assume I'd see much better value from those refills, drugs, and boosters if I use them for training my def, or even srt/spd?
I get the impression that there might be no right answer to this question and it will depend on how much networth I am comfortable blowing on drugs and boosters. If I want to minimize that overhead and only want to plan for how to use my current resources in the most efficient way possible without buying any more refills/drugs, then is it wasteful to consume these things on dex training?
Side note: Is it still bad form to talk so openly about your battle stats in the forums? I might delete this post later if so. Although muggers be warned - my wallet rarely contains over 1mil. So if you're strong enough to mug me, it's probably not an economical use of your energy to mug me :)
So I returned to Torn last year after 6+ years of inactivity. Have been playing consistently for nearly a year now but have been a bit hesistant to use my backlog of free refills until I'm in position to get the absolute most from them.
I'm approaching the point of unlocking the final gym for the best stat gains, so am thinking about doing it soon-ish (probably a few more weeks or 1-2 months to go yet) but am not 100% sure how best to organise a 99k happy jump to really get the most from the refills.
From what I've seen, most options for a 99k jump either rely on being lucky enough to find a specific book, or involve co-ordination with (and trust of) other players to structure your jumps together with mistletoe so that each player can get their trains in before their happy is stolen for the next person's jump. Given the amount of training I've got to do (100+ refills), I think I'll need all or most of a 15 minute reset window to hammer out my trains. Right? Or no?
Is there an option out there for hogging a 99k jump for a full 15 mins? Or will I need to potentially plan multiple 99k jumps to work through all my refillsin shorter windows?
And similarly is there any guided service that some players offer where someone with more experience could guide me through that process to answer my stupid questions, protect me from my own mistakes, and help me make the most of my refills?
I also assume that buying a 99k jump and hogging the entire window is likely to be more expensive, so planning for that weeks or months in advance could be a practical necessity, if anyone has any estimations to share for likely fair prices for this sort of thing.
I need to mug a total of 1M from any other player(s) for a Duke mission and I'm struggling to find targets I can get more than like 20k from.
Is there a mugging target list somewhere (I can't find one) or would someone here mind letting me mug them while holding sufficient funds for me to take, with my promise to return your money and pay an extra 1M on top of whatever I take?
You said you're nearly at the last gym for the best stat gains? Are you talking about George's?
Yes, I think that;s the one.
[background color=var(--bbc-body-bg-color)]you're prob[/background][background color=var(--bbc-body-bg-color)]ably already well past the happy jump point, and it'd be a better use of your money to spend that money on cans[/background]
Oh, would it change things if I had one stat super weak and far behind the rest that I'm trying to balance out? Upon my return I had one stat at 100m+ and another at 30k, plus the other two stats around 15m each. I have since trained the weakest stat to 1m, and had hoped to use the refills with a big jump to get it in line with my other non-whored stats to round them out a bit better, then go back to whoring my strongest stat.
But I've found all the modern stat/training thresholds a bit confusing (I don't think they were a thing back in my day, or maybe I didn't pay much attention) and am unsure if training a stat already past 1m is beyond the point of a 99k jump being optimal anymore? If it's going to better for me to just grind it out slowly with other drugs and boosters then that might actually make things easier for me to co-ordinate anyway.
[background color=var(--bbc-body-bg-color)]As for your refills, it would've been best to use them during Halloween[/background]
You're not the first to say this and now I'm worried i've been an idiot... Assuming I might be an idiot, could you explain (like i'm five) why that would have been better? I'm not against holding refills for next year if it's the smart play.
:O I didn't even consider anything other than hoarding the refills for training. What would have been the benefit of using them for the halloween event? Just lots of mugging and free stuff?

Only passively looking, I returned from a 6 year absence a few months ago and have been regularly active since. But at the time I took the first offer with decent pay that came my way.
Not sure if I'd even leave the current place, and would at the least give them a chance to counter if I find I can get more elsewhere. Really just looking to assess the current market and work out the modern range of bad/median/good pay grades.

Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate everyone's responses both here and in chat messages!
I think I'm going to hold onto my faction. For now it can remain a bit of a ghost ship, and eventually I'll look at recruitment and building it back into a proper community.
I worked hard in this faction years back, spent at least 2-3 years leading it, and could do so again once I get up to speed with all the changes to game mechanisms. It doesn't need to be the best faction in the game for me to enjoy it :) Plus I'm at nearly 4000 days of membership here and can't bring myself to restart at 0 again.
Next steps for me will be getting Donator status and looking at Discord channels, then I think I'll sit down with Ac3to's awesome guide links and work out what sort of combat stats I want to aim for so that I can go back to all the Training Guides and map out a suitably optimised training plan for myself. At first glance, I can see my Dex is super low and Def seems rather high, so maybe some work to bring my Dex up to the cap would give me a nicely rounded defensive profile and would give me a good chance to figure out how to make happy jumps work best for me.

I am active daily, usually drug free with occasional periods of drug use for training, but I will rehab if my stars ever drop under 5. I'm open to all offers, but will most likely take the job with the highest paycheck, specials arent very important to me.
