I feel that this new system of weekly income determining the star rating of a company is going to have an extremely detrimental effect on some company owners and it will remove a large chunk of the player economy centered around creating and selling 5 star companies. This has been around in Torn since the inception of companies and there is nothing wrong with it as it stands.
Firstly.. this update does NOTHING to correct the actual problem with companies which is the fact that 90% of the companies available out there generate virtually no income!
The biggest problem that I see in companies currently is that the demand for workers is too high, and there are too many companies that continuously drive the price of employees further and further upwards beyond what the majority of companies can afford. The result is that virtually all the lower tier companies, save ones like the furniture company that have a unique and valuable special, have no leverage in hiring. There is simply no demand for a position at most companies. If we give more value to high stat players that will only further increase the demand for workers which only compounds the problem and will, in all likelyhood, create an overall increase in wages.
Many are under the assumption that this will "thin out the herd" so to speak, which will mean less companies and therefor employers won't have to pay out as much to keep workers. This is a false assumption. There is no system for thinning out companies. A company that fails to generate money still has no overhead or even a real need to generate money in the first place in order to survive. All of these failing companies will still exist. They will still be there in need of employees which will mean that the demand for them will not drop (nor will wages)
This update also hits the lucrative business practices of both raising a 5 star company for sale, and trading companies in general. Because of the transient nature of the internet, and the general fact that you don't need a job in Torn to get by, employee turnover in this game has always been very high. This means that a company after this update will have no static value outside of its upgrades, which do not appreciate in value. This update will remove an inherent value that all companies currently have in their ability to provide job specials, which is really the main point of having the majority of companies with how the system is set up. The most likely result I can see from this is a general loss of interest in companies on a large scale. They won't be worth much in trade, it will still be a pain to generate a good income from them, and it will cost an arm and a leg for all of the low tier companies which basically had no actual value outside of their specials to begin with.
This is going to make life much harder for the vast majority of company owners. If you have a group of friends that will pad your companies profit then life will be amazing. You just boost to 10 stars and then you will easily get decent employees to fill it and maintain that at lower wages than normal. Contrast this to your average employer who routinely struggles to employ their company without surpassing their daily income and you can see where a problem will arise..
This system will most greatly benefit old established players that can either afford to pay far more than their company will generate in revenue, or that has a large group of friends that share their ridiculous stat levels and can boost their company up.
I say we either DO NOT alter how star ratings are generated (if its not broke why are we fixing it?) or allow for only the last 5 stars to be impacted by profits The change that we need to see is an increase in the ability of companies to generate profits and offer employees competitive wages. I feel that this new system will be in opposition to that need.
I am also against the "wait and see" attitude on this one because it will create a big problem that will require an even LARGER change in order to correct. Plus, we would have to risk sacrificing the 10 star system entirely, which would mean no additional specials.
I want the system to work, I want that extra special, but the makeshift idea that Ched has come up with just doesn't seem logical. Why would we exasperate one of the biggest problems in the current system? This just seems like setting ourselves up for failure!
