I was stuck at 44 items, and it never went up. I spend a load of merits to increase my awareness to 10, and still found nothing. After some time I reset the merits and just forgot about it. I was complaining to faction buddies that I, poor soul, never ever find anything. Compassionate hugs and words, sometimes the game giveth, sometime it doesn't.
Until now, I looked at the city map for the first time ever.
There were, piled on top of each other, these 511 items just to be picked up. Some junk, some less junk, some great - like 2 dumbbells.

18 years ago I made the decision of not marrying in the game for whatever (overly generous) merits, as I valued my irl peace and quiet regarding my game playing much more. My wife has no issue with me playing now, she thinks it's actually kinda cute.
So this was the serious answer to the likely not-so-serious question.
Online games are a great way to practice some conversational English, even if only in a written form. I started playing an AberMUD in 1989, just out of high school, when internet was a thing only for us tech university students and staff. It was a great time indeed, and it was the first time I could have direct conversations with native English speakers.
I didn't quite get what the problem was. Do other people get random chat requests all the time? Scary thought. It's must be like being a TV news broadcaster or something, people approaching you while you are queuing with your groceries, minding your own business...what a pain.
I have never been married. I think such a level of abstinence should be rewarded by a bunch of merits. Especially as the marriage merits come automatically - just marry some Schmuck who goes inactive, and you just collect the merits.
