The point is that if you're politely corrected on terminology by a member of the community that terminology refers to, you should listen instead of arguing about why you're actually right.

I wouldn't jump straight to the Paradox of Tolerance just because some says they "listen to both sides". 

There is value in listening to *any* side of *any* argument - even hate, bigotry, and intolerance, if just to fully understand it to more effectively combat it.

To be clear, I haven't once judged you, not even with the "asshole" line - that was in general about free speech, not about you specifically. I've tried to engage with you and explain why certain terms are considered problematic. 

This also isn't censorship - that is prohibition of speech or other content by authority, usually the government. Private citizens with no power over each other arguing about what words should or shouldn't be used is not equivalent. 

Words *do* matter - they carry power and weight, and to deny that displays ignorance learned from privilege. I am not judging you, or calling you "evil", "villain", "bad", etc - merely making an observation. 

Before it's brought up - there are multiple types of privilege and experiencing discrimination in one area does not mean you cannot have privilege in another. 

Well, no, it's not like using the "n" word. The "n" word is much more offensive and hasn't been considered derisive for centuries. 

It's more akin to "colored", "*****", or "oriental" - other antiquated terms that are now considered improper and somewhat offensive. 

It's not much like using "slut", either. "Slut" has always been an insult and any push about that word is more about changing the its context as a gendered insult for women in general, not to cull the word from the lexicon in its entirety. 

You're free to disagree on whether or not a word is offensive *to you*, but you cannot declare a word universly non-offensive - you don't get to make that decision for other people. 

I'm saying that you *shouldn't* use certain words, not that you *cannot* - there is a difference. "Cannot" implies proscription and therefore consequences - something that only authority can impose whether it be legal from the government, professional from the workplace, or social from others around you. 

Yes, freedom of speech, but freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence other than legal. 

It comes down to common courtesy and respect- whether or not you have enough respect for another person to reasonably abridge your speech for their comfort. 

We have the 1st Amendment and the right to say whatever slur we wish here in the USA; I'd never agree with hate speech laws or legal consequence for using a particular word.

That said - you can be right and still be an asshole at the same time.  

Using the preferred labels that are commonly agreed upon as polite is part of "keeping the values of acceptance and understanding strong within any community". 

Yes, "transexual" is generally considered antiquated or ignorant at best and an offensive insult at worst, like calling a crossdresser a "transvestite" but worse. 

It has not been socially appropriate for several decades and it's mostly been phased out of medical terminology (where it started) as well. 

It's like how "retarded" used to be appropriate both socially and medically for developmental disabilities, but became a slur. Language changes over time. 

*Some* people may self-identify as "transexual" but most see it as a slur. It's best to ask a particular person what they prefer if you insist on using that word.
