Five million years ago, when humanity's ancestors were just learning to walk upright, a star was ejected from Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, at a staggering 3.7 million mph. This month, a group of researchers spotted the superfast star traveling relatively close to Earth.
Researchers, led by Sergey Koposov of Carnegie Mellon University's McWilliams Center for Cosmology as part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5), spotted the star — known as S5-HVS1 — in the constellation Grus. According to a press release Tuesday, the star was just traveling just 29,000 light-years away from Earth, or "practically next door by astronomical standards."
Researchers said the "runaway" star was traveling at speeds about 10 times faster than most other stars in the galaxy. "The velocity of the discovered star is so high that it will inevitably leave the [Milky Way] and never return," said co-author Douglas Boubert of the University of Oxford.


This is super exciting, as we have long suspected that black holes can eject stars with very high velocities," Koposov said. "However, we never had an unambiguous association of such a fast star with the Galactic Center."
Astronomer Jack Hills first proposed that black holes can eject superfast stars at high velocities. But S5-HVS1 is the first time scientists have actually witnessed Hills Mechanism in action.
The discovery was made using the 12.8-foot Anglo-Australian Telescope and observations from the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite. The relative closeness of the star allowed for an "unprecedented" opportunity to learn about the phenomena.

Seeing this star is really amazing", Carnegie's Ting Li said. "As we know it must have formed in the Galactic Center, a place very different to our local environment. It is a visitor from a strange land."
Koposov and his team are now able to track the star's journey back to the center of the galaxy. They hypothesize that S5-HVS1 used to live with a companion star, but when the two drifted too close to Sagittarius A*, its companion was captured, while it was thrown back out.
"My favorite part of this discovery is thinking about where this star came from and where it's going," said Carnegie's Alex Ji. "It was born in one of the craziest places in the universe, near a supermassive black hole with lots of other nearby star friends; but it's going to leave our galaxy and die all alone, out in the middle of nowhere. Quite a fall from grace."

The giant black hole at the center of a distant galaxy has been spotted taking in gas and letting out two mighty "burps" of high-energy particles, lending support to the theory that such galactic cores go through cycles of messy activity.

Researchers presented images of the belching black hole Jan. 11 at the American Astronomical Society's winter meeting in National Harbor, Maryland, showing lingering evidence of two burps in a row.

"Black holes are voracious eaters, but it also turns out they don't have very good table manners," Julie Comerford, an astronomer at the University of Colorado Boulder, said during a news conference at the event today. "We know a lot of examples of black holes with single burps emanating out, but we discovered a galaxy with a supermassive black hole that has not one but two burps." Supermassive black holes that lurk at the center of galaxies can have masses ranging from a million to a billion times that of the sun. Although they often lie relatively dormant, they can snap into action when gas comes near, sucking it inward and blasting out some high-energy particles in the process the "burp." (Note that those particles come from near the black hole's event horizon, but not within its point of no return.)

The supermassive black hole in question lies at the center of a galaxy called SDSS J1354+1327, about 800 million light-years from Earth, and it seems to be making meals of gas released by a companion galaxy. Comerford's team combined images from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope to pinpoint the black hole (in X-ray) and two emerging bubbles of gas shocked into motion by the fast-moving particles: one above, and one below. The older burp happened earlier, and the bubble has had time to expand 30,000 light-years from the black hole, Comerford said. The newer burp, by contrast, appears as just a little loop that's made it 3,000 light-years from the black hole.



"This new burp is actually moving like a shock wave it's coming out very fast, and so it's kind of like a sonic boom of a burp," Comerford said, "whereas the gas to the south shows us an older burp that happens 100,000 years earlier before that newer burp."

Theory held that supermassive black holes would go through a cycle of feasting, burping and then napping for a while, Comerford said, and spotting these belches helps set a pace for that process. While two burps 100,000 years apart may seem like a pretty slow metabolism, it's very fast on cosmic scales.

The pace matched computer models of how those interactions would work, Comerford added. In the video below, for instance, from work by Jared Gabor and Frédéric Bournaud of CEA Saclay in France, you're watching a galaxy from the side as burps emerge above and below it.



The black hole Comerford imaged is getting its fuel from a companion galaxy next door the two are exchanging a stream of stars and gas after recently colliding.

Closer to home, there's evidence that the black hole at the center of the Milky Way burped as well, at least once: In 2010, researchers found bubbles of gas expanding outward from the galactic core, from an event millions of years ago. The pace of such burps suggests that the Milky Way will indeed burp again someday.

"Right now, our galaxy's supermassive black hole is firmly in the nap phase of the feast-burp-nap cycle, but it's just waiting for its next meal to come along," Comerford said. "In the future, it will probably feast and burp once again."

But that galactic burp is nothing to worry about, she told Space.com. "If our Milky Way's black hole became active again, we are far enough away from it that we would be fine," Comerford said. "If our solar system was very close to the black hole, though, we'd be fried."

A Russian cannibal couple drugged, killed and ate nearly 30 people in the City of Krasnador, officials said.

Dmitry Baksheev and his wife, Natalia Baksheeva, have reportedly been skinning and eating their victims for the past three decades.

The couples gruesome practices were discovered on Sept. 11, when city road workers found disturbing selfies on a discarded cell phone near their work site.

On the phone were photos of a man with different parts of a dismembered human body in his mouth, The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.

Authorities quickly linked the mobile device to Baksheev and arrested him.

While in custody, Baksheev admitted to practicing cannibalism at least 30 times in the past 20 years and was charged with one count of murder, The Moscow Times reported.

Further investigation revealed sickening details of the couples alleged decades-long cannibal practices.

After knocking out their victims with sedatives, the two would skin and eat portions of the human flesh, officials said. They then froze the remains or packed them in jars with saline solution.

The couple is even accused of trying to feed the canned human meat to unsuspecting soldiers at the military academy where they worked.

A search through the couples disheveled hostel accommodation, located on the military base, revealed more incriminating evidence, investigators said.

In the place of residence of the suspects, the investigators discovered fragments of the human body in saline solution in the dormitory...Frozen meat parts of unknown origin were seized in the kitchen, officials told CBS News.

Authorities also allegedly discovered a glass jar with a canned hand, a photograph of a human head on top of a fruit platter and a video tutorial on cannibalism in the couples home.

The couple could be charged with additional counts of murder as the probe continues.

DALLAS The family of a Texas teen who hanged himself says their son was involved in a ghoulish online game that calls on participants to complete a series of tasks before taking their own lives, and some schools are warning parents about the so-called Blue Whale Challenge.

Jorge Gonzalez told San Antonio television station WOAI (http://bit.ly/2ufDDhG ) that he wanted to caution others after his son, Isaiah, was found hanging in his bedroom closet Saturday in the family's home with his cellphone propped up on a shoe to record his death.

A report on the boy's death from the San Antonio Police Department does not mention the challenge. But Gonzalez' family said in the days after the teen died, they pieced together from his social media and communication with friends that he had participated in the game.

His sister, Alexis, told the TV station that a person behind the challenge had gathered personal information from Isaiah and had threatened to harm the family.

The police department did not return a message left by The Associated Press asking whether authorities were investigating the game as a factor in the case. Many parents and other authorities are skeptical that the game actually exists, citing a lack of suicides directly attributed to it.

Agent Michelle Lee of the FBI's San Antonio office said the agency is not assisting in the investigation, but urged parents to monitor their children's online activities.

"It's a reminder of one of the many dangers and vulnerabilities that children face using various social media and apps online every day," Lee said. "Parents must remain vigilant and monitor their child's usage of the internet."

Gonzalez is the second parent this week to tell news outlets about a child who died by suicide allegedly as a result of the game. A Georgia woman spoke Monday to CNN about her 16-year-old daughter killing herself as part of the challenge but asked that their names not be used.

Educators, law enforcement officers and parents across the country have reported rumors about the challenge for months. But until this week, there had been no allegations in the United States about a death directly linked to the game. Suicides in Russia, Brazil and a half dozen other countries were reportedly linked to the challenge in cases that usually involved teenagers or young adults.

Notes have been posted on school district social media pages and sent home to parents in school districts across the country, including Vacaville, California; Baldwin County, Alabama; Warwick, Rhode Island; and Denver.

In Connecticut, Danbury Public Schools Superintendent Sal Pascarella sent a short note to parents around May after administrators from the district's 19 schools started hearing about the challenge from kids as young as elementary schoolers.

"The elementary school principals started hearing their kids talk about this thing. Then the secondary principals started mentioning the same thing," he said. "We discovered on our school network content about the challenge had been looked at on YouTube. ... I decided I would rather err on the side of information with parents."

Parents allege that teens reach out to game administrators called curators through various social media platforms. Those curators lead the players through 50 days of challenges including watching scary movie clips, cutting symbols into their arms and legs and taking pictures of themselves in dangerous positions such as on the edge of a roof or on train tracks.

The participants are allegedly required to take pictures of their challenges being completed and share them before being directed to end their lives on the 50th day. A search of related hashtags on Instagram shows users posting pictures of scars and cuts or memes that depict suicide, and a similar Twitter search shows users reaching out for curators to lead them through the game.

Instagram warns that some images tagged under some of the related phrases could be harmful and directs users to mental health resources. Twitter assesses reports of self-harm or suicide and also directs users to mental health or suicide-prevention resources.

The Center for Missing and Exploited Children is aware of the challenge and encourages parents to report it and similar activity to the center's cyber tip line even if they feel like they do not have enough information to go to police, said Eliza Harrell, the group's director of education and outreach.

Harrell said she had not heard about the use of threats and intimidation, but said it was particularly concerning.

"That really adds another level to this," she said. "We do not tend to address specific apps or games when we give advice to parents."

When parents talk to their children, "the underlying conversation needs to be about dealing with strangers online and putting themselves in a position of trust," she added. "It's an issue that a child is listening to someone anonymously and doing what they are told by a stranger to do."

This happen to me when I lived in my mobile home around 2007, It was not easy to get signal for my cell phone inside because of metal. One day when it was raining and lightning outside. I put my cell phone against the window to get a signal. But something happen for which I do not understand. When I was standing there with my cell phone against the window, something had happen to me that cause my body to jump back from the window and when I jump back, A strange sound came from my mouth. My body had reaction on its own for a moment. I think it had something to do with flash of light from lightning. What happen to my emotions did not happen all at once. What has occur before I would lose that emotion, It would get triggered by what I experience and when that happens. Emotion that was triggered, it would always come on strong then eventually dying out. I think fear was the first one that I had lost and it happen one day when I was outside at work. I had my sunglasses on and I looked at the sun and it looked really big at that time and I think by doing that. It had triggered my fear, I was scary in my mind. Thinking we were heading into the sun. I did not run around yelling. It just took place in my mind. after a short time it had died out and never return again. I was at a wake for my dad and I did feel sad, But that feel starting to get strong at center of me and it was not normal.Feeling was building up,It felt like I was going to cry then it stop short of that happening. I never felt it like that before.It came on strong then disappear. That happen to me in 2007. But anger part happen to me when I was working at Walmart in September 2014. Whenever I thought about my brother and my step sister It was make me really upset. Anger would come on strong every time. Never else had this effect at all. When I got to middle of the month, It was start dying down. Near the end of it, If I did think of my brother and step sister. I felt a feel in my head. It was like picking at the wound if I thought of them. Before 2014 I went to doctor to have Mri and lesions were discovered. I do not known if flash of light could some how make these lesions possible or not.Before losing them, I just wonder why only certain experience would make these emotions come on so strong in the first place?Human body is not fully understood to this date yet.In the past I was never the type to cry a lot or get scared very easy. But I did get upset more then cry or get scared. It is very strange not feel these feels anymore.

After a strange experience a long time ago, I can no longer feel angry,fear or sadness. I may have lost more then just these emotions.No one keeps tracks of all possible emotions that they feel.
