Have you ever been mercilessly mugged after putting up items for sale in the item market or in your bazaar?

Have you ever attempted to trade with someone, only to have them cancel the trade and mug you?

Fear not! - although scamming and any form of mugging is compeltely legal and a very common practice by a big chunk of torn's community, by having simple game knowledge and taking some easy precautions you can 100% prevent other players from mugging your hard-earned cash!

In this guide I will demonstrate all the possible ways to safely store away your cash, as well as provide tips on how to sell items and carry out trades safely. I will classify the storage methods as limited / unlimited storage relative to how much cash you can store, limited / unlimited access relative to how often can you withdraw & deposit cash, and safe / unsafe relative to how overall safe they are. Some will be listed as (un)safe or (un)limited meaning that they depend on the situations described.

How to Store Money: 

1 - Property Vault

Properties with vault: Palace, Castle, Private Island & Unique Properties

- Small Vault - costs $20m, holds up to $100m.

- Medium Vault - costs $42m, holds up to $300m.

- Large Vault - costs $98m, holds up to $500m.

- Extra Large Vault - costs $215m, holds up to $1b.

note: you don't need to live in the property to use the vault - a common practice for younger players is to live in a rented private island, and keep a palace with the vault upgrade, jumping there whenever you need to access it (careful with happiness resets and the inability to hire/fire staff more than once per day, necessary to swap properties).

note: you can't use the vault from rented properties.

note: remember to turn off "vault sharing" if you are living with another player to protect your money (go to Properties > Vault).

verdict: limited storage; unlimited access; (un)safe.

2 - Faction Vault

note: only people with access to faction money can send it back; anyone with access can take it.

note: careful with factions trying to scam you!

note: if the faction reaches 0 respect and gets destroyed the cash disappears!

note: you can't use it when in hospital, but anyone with access to the vault can send you money at any time, even when travelling!

verdict: unlimited storage; (un)limited access; (un)safe.

3 - Company Vault

note: people working in a Software Corporation can hack your company's bank for 3% of the total cash stored, unless you own the Syscore MFG stock block benefit

note: all company employees can keep track of your withdrawals, deposits & total cash stored.

note: only the company director can withdraw / deposit cash.

verdict: unlimited storage; unlimited access; (un)safe.

4 - Ghost Trades

note: trades last 6h, afterwards the money returns to your hand - only useful if can log in again within 6h to set a new trade.

note: the other person can cancel trade and have it return to your hand, free to mug - make sure you do it only with someone you trust!

note: once a trade ends, you have a 12 second window where the cash can not be mugged.

note: this is the only method where you can personally withdraw the money when in hospital.

verdict: unlimited storage; unlimited access; (un)safe.

5 - Bookies (rip bookie2.0)

note: take note when you can last edit the bookie bet, otherwise you can risk losing it all!

note: you can only currently place a maximum bet of $1b.

verdict: limited storage; (un)limited access; (un)safe.

6 - Stocks

note: can take a long time to sell - sometimes over a week!

note: might drop in price - you might end up losing money!

note: when they sell the cash goes to your bank, you have to withdraw it within 24h (protects it from being mugged).

verdict: unlimited storage; limited access; (un)safe.

7 - City Bank

note: you have to wait for investment to end to withdraw it - you can invest it for 1-2weeks, or 1-2-3 months.

note: you can only invest up to $2b ($3b with Oil Rig perk).

note: you always make money from it.

note: when the investment ends the money remains in the bank forever until you withdraw it, safe from mugging.

verdict: limited storage; limited access; safe.

8 - Cayman's Bank

note: beware of players that sit in Cayman's and mug anyone as soon as they land.

note: unlike the city bank, you can withdraw your cash whenever you want, but you have to travel there.

note: unlike the city bank, there is no limit to how much you can invest.

note: the investment profit is smaller when compared to city bank.

verdict: unlimited storage; (un)limited access; (un)safe.

9 - Buy Points & Other Popular Items

note: make sure you pick popular items that sell fast (points, xanax, cans, fhc).

note: make sure you are able to sell the item safely (look below on the guide for how to sell items without getting mugged).

note: beware of item price fluctuations.

note: you can sell some items directly to NPC shops in the city for a safe sale, however you potentially lose cash by doing so.

verdict: unlimited storage; limited access; (un)safe.

10 - Auction House

note: once you make a bid you can not cancel it - you have to wait for it to end or until someone outbids you.

note: the trick is to place very low bids on popular items - if you win you take home a very underpriced item, if you lose your money goes to your bank and you have to withdraw it within 24h or it goes into your hand.

note: you can also ask a friend to outbid you if you need your cash asap.

verdict: unlimited storage; limited access; safe

11 - Piggy Bank

note: costs 5 mission credits and it's available for new players.

note: allows you to store infinite cash there, with no chance of it being stolen from you.

note: you have to break it to withdraw the cash, so it's a one-time-use item.

verdict: unlimited storage; limited access; safe

12 - Do not give cash to other players that offer to "hold", "store" or "invest" the cash for you - these are well known scams!

How to Trade Safely:

1 - Self hosp - you can't get mugged if you are already in the hospital, so make sure you do so when doing direct trades (you are able to add/remove cash and any items to a trade while hosped, as well as decline/accept it); it's a common practice to cancel trades, forcing the cash to return to the player's hand and proceed to mug them (look below for tips on how to self hosp efficiently).

2 - Turn off revives - otherwise people can buy your stuff, revive you and mug you (go to Settings > General Settings).

3 - Initiate the trade - the person starting the trade has the upper hand as he/she determines the finalizing time of the trade, so it's better to always be the one starting the trade.

4 - Pay attention - when a trade ends you have 12 seconds before the cash can be mugged, meaning if you are active and paying attention to the trade the other player can't cancel it and mug you before you store your cash away.

5 - Always double-check - it has become a common scam to remove the cash from the trade right before the other player accepts, so always check what you are giving and what you are receiving!

6 - Blacklist buy/muggers & scammers - this will help you remember them and this prevent them from buy/mugging you in the future; this also helps other players spot scammers and buy/muggers by looking at the amount of enemies they have (go to Lists > Enemies > Disable exchanges); another thing you can do is to search the trade forums and check if they have a trade thread, by rating it down and commenting that he buy/mugs you can help future players from being mugged by him.

note: you can check the players with the highest number of enemies in tornstats, as well as total money mugged: References > Player Graphs > Enemies / Money Mugged; some of these are torn's biggest muggers/scammers and are worth blacklisting straight off just to be sure!

note: you can increase your blacklist capacity by 10 with a cost of 25 points an unlimited amount of times in the point building.

7 - Enemy : Friend ratio - when trading with someone new, check their profile for enemies & friends, if they happen to have a lot enemies maybe it's best to play it safe and assume they are only trying to scam or mug you (you can check the players with the highest number of enemies in tornstats: References > Player Graphs > Enemies; some of these are torn's biggest muggers/scammers).

8 - Clothing Store - by working in a 7* Clothing Store company you lose 75% less cash when mugged.

9 - Understand mugging techniques - the better you know how mugging works and all the tricks muggers use, the better you will understand how to fight them efficiently; I will link here a good guide on how to buy/mug:

How to Sell Items Safely:

1 - Pick the right method - besides direct trades, there are multiple other ways that you can sell your stuff:

- Bazaar

- Item Market

- Auction House

- Points Market

- Stock Market 

- Property Market

2 - Self hosp - you can't get mugged if you are already in the hospital, so make sure you do so when selling items through bazaar or item market.

3 - Turn off revives - otherwise people can buy your stuff, revive you and mug you (go to Settings > General Settings).

4 - Travel - you can't get mugged if you are flying, but keep in mind once you land you are immediately exposed; some players will buy items and fly to try and get there before you land to try and mug you instantly by using these methods to travel faster:

- Airstrip with private pilot: ~30% faster (only available in Private Island; costs $75m + $30k staff).

- WLT stock bb: ~50% faster (costs ~$5b).

- Business Class Ticket: ~70% faster (costs $6-12m).

note: these bonus do not stack, if you have multiple ones the best one takes effect!

note: business class ticket is a one time use!

note: you can not access bazaar when travelling, so make sure you open it beforehand!

note: working in a Theater company hides your travel destination!

5 - Avoid bulk sales - by selling your items in few quantities at a time in your bazaar, you avoid attention from a large portion of buy/muggers; this is also helpful when selling your points through the point market.

6 - Blacklist buy/muggers & scammers - you can set an option where blacklisted players can not buy from your bazaar, thus preventing them from buy/mugging you in the future; this also helps other players spot scammers and buy/muggers by looking at the amount of enemies they have (go to Lists > Enemies > Disable exchanges).

note: you can check the players with the highest number of enemies in tornstats, as well as total money mugged: References > Player Graphs > Enemies / Money Mugged; some of these are torn's biggest muggers/scammers and are worth blacklisting straight off just to be sure!

note: you can increase your blacklist capacity by 10 with a cost of 25 points an unlimited amount of times in the point building.

note: in order to find a mugger's identity you can reduce their stealth chance by completing the Forensic Science education, as well as having high dexterity.

7 - Toggle close/open bazaar - If you still have items in your bazaar and want to log off without worries, remember to close bazaar, otherwise players can buy stuff from you when you are away and mugg you (go to Items > Bazaar > click the arrow).

How to Self Hosp:

1 - Blood Bags - to take an incompatible blood bag you need to complete Intravenous Therapy education course and can not be full hp; this will hospitalize you for ~1h.

2 - Russian Roulette - go to casino and create a russian roulette game for $10 and lose, put more cash if you want someone to join faster (or ask a friend to join); this will only hospitalize you for a few minutes and it might take a few games before you lose if you don't have triple-shot unlocked.

3 - Small Explosive Device - purchase a SED from item market, place it in a parcel & open it; it costs ~$5-7m and will hospitalize you for ~5h.

4 - Self Bounty - have someone place a bounty on you and wait to get hospitalized; the higher the reward, the faster you'll get hosped.

5 - Ask a friend or pay someone to attack you.

6 - Attack someone and lose - keep in mind this only hospitalizes you for a few minutes and wastes energy.

How to Play Casino Safely:

1 - Russian Roulette - when playing high stakes russian roulette games keep in mind someone may be stalking the game, waiting to mug the winner so make sure you have a trade/vault/bookie open and are ready to store your money asap! Another trick is to get mug protection first.

2 - Poker - when playing high stakes Poker games keep in mind the other players at the table, or even outsiders stalking, may be waiting to mug you. To avoid this, know that you can only get mugged once you leave the table meaning you can either self hosp before leaving the table, or have a trade/vault/bookie open and be ready to store your money asap!

3 - Jackpot - if you do happen to win the slot jackpot be ready to store the cash asap, anyone looking at the casino statistics can view the last winner and mug them to try their luck!

4 - Lottery - no need to worry if you happen to win one of the casino lotteries, the game will give you a 3 day protection that makes other players unable to even initiate an attack against you!
