Research suggests that trigger warnings may increase anticipatory anxiety, meaning anxiety that occurs before people encounter disturbing material, without substantially reducing their emotional response once they actually see the content (Bridgland et al., 2024). A meta-analysis found a moderate increase in negative emotions before exposure, but virtually no effect on emotional reactions during or after exposure (Bridgland et al., 2024).
This pattern was also found among people with trauma histories. Trigger warnings did not reduce anxiety, including among participants with probable PTSD, and in some cases were associated with slightly higher anxiety (Jones et al., 2020).
Overall, the evidence suggests that trigger warnings have limited benefits and may produce small increases in anticipatory anxiety. However, there is not enough evidence to conclude that they cause significant or long-term psychological harm (Bridgland et al., 2024; Jones et al., 2020).
