I'm sorry but this just read like a whine to me.
Not to say you may bring a valid point forward, but you come out from a position of privilege and your expressed view showcases this perfectly and then proposes a solution that is in effect an un balanced (or rather say: unfair) fight.
(hear me out until the end as I think you're exposing the lack of a mechanic for advanced ranked factions to fight off one another due to the fact they can't due to the inherent imbalances that may exist).
Allow me to explain:
- You start off by exposing the aggrieved parties:
We, the leaderships of the top 10-15 HOF factions
- And you say the obvious first as well:
factions at the top find themselves in a tiny pool
[background color=var(--bbc-body-bg-color)]Comment: straight from the get-go this is fairly obvious and understandable when looking into the top 15 of HOF.
[/background]The respect amounted by these factions largely surpasses what others have. And here is where your argument starts to break: you've provided no data to support your claim. You've not provided a distribution of respect amongst factions to support your claim that there is a bigger pool that you should (indeed, as your argue) be matched with a larger lists of factions.
We all know this is not a bell curve but we may consider very active factions, and it is true that at the very top end, there's less factions, and in the middle (or even lower) pack, there's more factions. That's just how it so happens of the distributions of factions to exist.
And I'm taking respect as an indication of `strength`, to which the system of ranked warfare does not even take it into account. So it essentially tries to make it as fair as possible. Keyword here is: fair.
Which seems to be your whole whine about, that because you are so strong, that you have less strong `frienemies` to punch.
- Because you want to punch the less strong ones:
For the rest of the HOF, if they are lucky, they will win more than 50% of their limited fights, which means they will also progress - albeit even more slowly. If they win 50% or fewer, they will forever remain in Bronze - despite having the strength and ability to wipe the floor with dozens of factions that will be able to progress through Silver and beyond.
Comment: First, you're making a statement that just because your pool is smaller a faction is less inclined to have more or less wins. This point in mute. What makes a faction more or less able to gather more wins is how good the system is in ensuring fairness (in selecting the opponents each one faces). And this goes all the way up and down the ranks, total respect, etc.
So any faction, a lower or mid or high tier should in theory find themselves towards the 50% mark. Because all her pairings should be of equal strength, thus likely to win as much as they lose.
The determining factor should be how each faction applies itself to the ranked war to determine the outcome.
Not who is ranked better or is stronger or has more respect and what-not.
Secondly, your whine becomes more prevalent when you put yourself(elves) as big boys that can't `wipe the floor` with the small fish.
despite having the strength and ability to wipe the floor with dozens of factions that will be able to progress through Silver and beyond.
Now it's important to say that we don't yet know how sustainable it is for factions to rank up and to maintain such a rank (I haven't personally seen the impact from Ched's implementation myself nor from others).
- You touch the point of balance:
In a balanced system, there may initially be some lopsided matches as the ranks sort themselves out
Comments: I find it quite funny that you consider lopsided matches at the beginning and not at the "far end" of the ranked journey. I believe you're proposing the opposite to what you're claiming in fact (to which I agree to some extent) that the more a faction advances through the ranks, there must be a way to put higher ranked factions face-off each other.
The question is: how?The system may not be perfect, but it is setting out to be fair(er) than most. Even if we consider there's improvements to be made here.
But to understand what needs to change I would start with the question of:
- What is the "ranked" status meant to signify?
a. The best faction on Torn? (isn't this what the HOF and respect count is for?)
b. The best "fighting" faction on Torn?
To me, this system came to answer b. So it's irrespective of big, medium, small fish and those denominations get thrown out of the window.
Perhaps this was clearer to me or aligned with my expectations, and the same cannot be said to others who were looking to Ranked Warfare to provide different things.
So far, the system seems to be implemented in a way that is consistent with itself.
- But wait, what is there to improve?
I won't claim to have a solution. Ideas are plenty. Could there be a `handicap` given to factions so higher ranked factions can face off each other? How would it work even?
Unsure.
Could it perhaps enforce that only a selection of members from faction A can do battle with selected members from faction B? (instead of 100 vs 100) ?
This also accounts for the fact that not every faction has 100 members. (I mean... from a fairness point of view. the current system already looks like it accounts for this since it denotes overall strength calculations.)
My point is: instead of the `whole` calculation be made on the entirety of the faction, could it be made partially, so it finds common ground between two higher ranked factions?
I don't know. But happy to hear yours and Ched's view.
This is already getting way longer than I was expecting (I'm sorry!), but overall, although your letter is very politely written, it has thrown the logic and fairness out of the window in its essence. So I would recommend asking what the goal is with the system first.
