I just did the math and realized tomorrow is my 14 year Torn City anniversary. I never would have thought back then I would still be playing in 2019. Any other old timers here?

If it's chinese style crispy duck, which I believe it is given the pancake and scallions,  it's probably either hoi sin or plum sauce.

Keeps saying I have a loan out when I've never taken one. I paid one off now it says it again.

Good to hear from all you folks. I'm sure some of you have been active most of the time but it seems like it's pretty common to go inactive for years at a time. I still have all my old friends accounts from that time saved, and most of them haven't been active since 08 or 09. My longest time inactive was I think 7 years, came back in 2016 after getting an e-mail out of the blue. Strange but cool  that torn doesn't just delete old accounts. Wish they'd saved my photos though, would be pretty funny to see my old Mr torn photos lol.

You're right, I haven't been very active, just log in from time to time and mess around. I played a lot when I was in middle school and early high school, around 2005 to 2009 or so. I don't really spend a whole lot of time online at all to be honest, busy with work and family.

These are all much better than the ones in the newspaper. My guess is the mods want the site to stay family friendly despite the game revolving around robbing and murdering each other. Because the first place a players parents will go to see if the site is appropriate for their darling is an obscure segment in the newspaper. Not the actual gameplay.

I lived in taibei for a while as a kid. It's a neat little country, at the time (late 90's to early 2000's) it was much more developed and westernized than the mainland, although the PRC is catching up these days. I'm sure much has changed though. I'm sure I've been to gaoxiong, don't really remember as I was quite young but I do remember going on quite a few trips, and Taiwan ain't that big an island. Anyway, hope you have fun. Are you going for a trip, or to study or work?

I've been wanting to start studying chinese again myself. I grew up in China and Taiwan, as an American expatriate. It's an incredibly complex language, especially once you consider characters, tones, and regional dialects. Most educated people will speak mandarin but china is a huge country, and one that has "assimilated" many cultures, so dialects will vary from somewhat similar to not the same at all. But like I said you will be able to communicate with virtually anyone in a major metropolitan center in mandarin.

I moved back to the states when I was 15 and regret immensely not learning more of the language while I was immersed in it. In cities like shanghai and taibei it is easy to surround yourself with only English speakers (or whatever your native language is). I didn't really appreciate the opportunity and experience I was getting, but in fact hated living abroad and wanted to live like a normal American. Grass is always greener sort of situation.

I still speak enough " to get by" which is easy to pick up by just living there and having to tell cab drivers where to go, go shopping or going out to eat, and you can usually mangle the language pretty good and still have people understand you especially in big cities with lots of expatriates. But if you really want to learn the absolute correct pronunciation and corresponding characters, it's a real discipline. Very few to no foreigners ever truly become fluent like this, not without growing up there. I knew a few kids who's parents had been missionaries and they grew up in the countryside, and they spoke mandarin practically perfectly.

No I paid the whole thing a month or so ago, which struck me as odd because I've never gone to the loan shark. And the icon disappeared, and now its back saying I have an outstanding loan of 870,000. Again I have never visited the loan shark. I mean it's not that much money but its annoying.
