The hardest thing to accept is that unless you have first hand experience your opinion is pretty much meaningless and often harmful.

"Get over it" is a natural response based on a different reality because it's what *you* would do. The problem is you can't comprehend the other person's situation.

I've got family with some mental health challenges and I battled for a long time to understand that how *I* would fix it doesn't matter because I can't truly put myself in their shoes. It was and is difficult to stop trying to fix it and just be supportive.

I wish there was better support out there for the people who need it.

TLDR Keep don't dictate solutions to problems you don't really understand, listen and be supportive.

In fairness that is probably one of the least offensive Oscar jokes. It was a pretty high profile case here and some of the jokes at the time were hilarious but very non pc.
