This is a long post with a dozen screenshots and an explanation of my experience. Hopefully this helps some of you out in finding items. This is the first item I found. You can't see items unless you're fully zoomed …

I found a box of chocolates.
For those not immediately familiar with how the new system works, you need to zoom all the way into the map and look for TINY icons, about the sizes of the smallest buildings. My box of chocolates looked like an actual open cardboard box, right shape and colours so it stood out a little amongst all the grey. Not sure if everything you can pick up has its own icon or not.
Because they're so small, it's best to take your time looking. Not sure if items are instanced to individuals or not though. If other people can grab something before you can, you might need to rush but I dunno. Because all of the little buildings could have been grey items for all I knew, I was hovering my mouse over everything.
Certainly far more taxing than the old purely luck based system. Looks like I won't be getting any more SE's XD

I just found a first aid kit and it was basically a tiny blue dot when fully zoomed in, can't imagine I woulda caught it zoomed out any more than i was.
I went with JJ's Zoom in 2x (or out 1 from max) this is a box of chocolates

For those wondering I have 1 merit in awareness+education. I've found 3 items already.
That means I've found 3 in the past 30 min
By comparison I found 58 in the past 1,740 days with 15,923,495 clicks.
Also my eyes hurt now.

i have been very concerned about the fact that i feel like this system is strongly biased toward those not using torn on mobile. i have never found anything on mobile in respo and have looked alot more than i did on my lap top.
