Finding items in city

jdawg011 [1742498]They should offer a refund in awareness with this update, at least we could test what different awareness levels do to help. My guess is it increases the size a tiny amount and increases spawn rate, but it sure feels like a waste having only found two items with 7 awareness after almost an hour searching.

I'm sure they will change it a bit but for now it barely feels worth it having the merits.

jdawg011 [1742498]So I tested finding items in different zoom. I found a taser with 100% close zoom. I zoomed out once, I could still see it but it was small, and zooming out again removed it from view, and putting the mouse over it did not let you pick it up.

You need to be in one of the 2 closest zooms to see and pick up items.

I reopened a window, went to torn.com, went to the city, and it was STILL THERE. I repeat: I closed the window with the item in view, opened another window, went to the city, and it's still there

Awareness should only increase the chance you have an item spawn when you are searching the map. There is some bonus to it which I doubt anyone ever got an exact value of.
Also I have the same size objects as other people who have been posting images of found items and I have 10/10 awareness.

Having read through the thread and played around with it a little, here are my hypotheses:

The capacity of the map is 3 items, once there are 3 items on the map no further items will spawn, awareness does not have an effect on this limit.

The city finds are generated using the same random engine as Hallow Town and Xmas Town drops, based on the observation of someone getting 2 FHCs. During Xmas Town on a single use of moves I had two gift cards dropped, yet in the entirety of the rest of the event I found no others. This is pretty standard Torn random - in my experience.

At the head of each hour or other time period, a roll is made for a city find to be generated, if successful a further roll is made to determine item type, then another within that subsection for the item itself. Awareness affecting as always the quantity of finds rather than the quality of finds. The item is then allocated a grid reference and on next reload of that square under zoom will display.

I found two types of confectionary and a flash grenade within twenty minutes, but have in the past hour found nothing more. Ched also stated in one of the announcements that it may take a few days for items to spawn and accumulate. Presumably those with higher awareness will likely find they have more items spawn per week/month and fill the city find "bank" faster.

All of my finds have been within coloured segments of the map. As I have only found 3 items total it's a little early to speculate on whether awareness affects how easy it is to find an item - in terms of how hard I have to look with 10/10 merits in awareness.

If I only ever have to zoom in on coloured areas of the map in order to find my items then it significantly reduces the time and eye strain. This alone would make it worth having 10/10 merits for me personally. Otherwise I'll probably wipe and redo my merits as I will not have a larger bank of items nor have a better chance of finding a higher quality item than someone with 0/10 merits in awareness.

If the sole variable is having a higher chance of an item spawn per time period each time around but everybody gets to 3 items over a day or two then it's not for me. I certainly don't intend to spend more than a few minutes a day zoomed in on the map!

Since the old awareness/city find was never nailed down exactly I have no clue if it's the same beast in a different skin or an entirely newly coded finds engine. The number of items found in a day, so far, is no more for me on this new system than the old, but time will tell.

I agree, but I just found a morphine, which is one of the items Legaci reported finding, and I could only see it in the closer 2 zooms The further two I was unable to see it, or click it. It is still sitting there after leaving my computer and logging out of Torn.
