Does anyone like to play old school computer games on their run down laptops? What games do you like to play?
A few games I've enjoyed: Lincity (Simcity clone), Railroad tycoon, Dune2000, An old school game called cannon fodder (point and click war game).
What recommendations can you make for old games that are free to download and play? (I do also have emulators for n64 and snes, but maybe there'll be another thread for that.)
Cannon fodder is one of the greatest games of all time. Anything from sensible in the 90s is good. Anything from bullfrog in the 90s is good as well power monger, populus 2 , dungeon keeper 2 etc etc. Bullfrog became lionhead and i think they make games for the xbox now.
Try Gta 1 and 2. They are free on the rockstar website.
Cannon fodder really is one of the best games ever made. I also agree with you on dungeon keeper, though I can't find a decent copy of it anywhere. I remember playing gta 1 and 2 (and that London one) with my dad when I was a little kid.
I haven't heard of power monger. Nor have I played populous 2, I played the first one and didn't get along with it at all. So thanks for suggesting them.
Did you ever play king's quest or space quest? They were awesome games. I'm gonna have a hunt for them right now.
a game named UFOs :D dont know how many of you guys know it but it was a lot of fun i have lost my original disk but managed to find and download it from the web :D so many great memorys with that game :D

No. but i have heard of them.
The amiga computer had a lot of classic games. Hired Guns for example that burnt up a LOT of my free time.
The budget label sold out sells a decent version of dungeon keeper 2. Well it works awesomely on my ancient 2007 laptop. it will be dirt cheap as well. The problem with old games is that they require a lot tinkering with to get running on a decent pc.
If you have a 'super computer' its going to have problems running old games.
My crappy laptop is single core 1gig ram 1.8ghz processor, it can run most old games well but not all of them.
If you have a good pc you could try googling dosbox and downloading it and do some tinkering, then maybe you can play more old games.
Open TTD (transport tycoon deluxe) Battle for Westnoth Free Orion (inspired on Master of Orion) Free Civ (inspired on sid meier's civilization) Free Col (inspired on sid meier's colonization) Warzone 2010 0 A.D. Unknown Horizons
be warned , some are near "final product" quality while others are still under development
Yeah, some years ago, i found a special edition with the first 3 X-Com games :) worth every single buck, Battle for Wesnoth is enjoyable, more if you get to play multiplayer. And you can´t go wrong with Dungeon Keeper, i think i saw some re-edition that could be runned on more modern pc´s.

i also play NES and N64 emulators, but i have usb controllers for them. its alot of fun.
A game I used to enjoy playing with my younger brother was T.O.U. (Tunnels of the underworld), which is, despite the name a game with spaceships, and it's played from sideview with up to 4 local players (which was very difficult since we had only one keyboard) and if I remember right 60 A.I. players, which our old computer wasn't capable of xD
Also, if you'd like to play something along the lines of the settlers, (which might very well already have some abandoned titles of its own), try clonk planet, it's a weird mix of rts and 2D side-scrolling game. pretty hard to explain. you jump, run, build and fight.
I had an old computer that had a few old games on it that I'd play endlessly after school. It had BattleZone which was my favourite, Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 (2nd favourite), Tomb Raider 1 & 2 (2 was my faviourite) and an intensely violent one (Or at least it was back then) called Blood.
Had a few other bits and bobs on it... Ohh wait there's Virtua Cop 2, Quake 2 and a demo of Outlaws, pretty fun.
There was a couple of others that I forget the names of, one was a spaceship racing game where you had to fly across some planet, and another was on a dirt track and you had to race a remote control truck/monster truck thing from a kind-of birds eye view.
Unfortunately the computer is broken and gone now, rest in peace childhood. (Edited in some paragraphs, nobody likes big blocks of text.)
Still have a Commodore C64c and looking at buying an Amiga A1200 again, Still have a PSX, PS2 and N64 hooked up to my TV though. as far as the rest go, I emulate everything from the NES to the DS. (PSX and Nintendo DS on my phone aswell at the moment, playing Pokemon Black 2)
lol i remember all these games from the old days. The early 90s were an epoch of rising of the videogame industry. The ones i enjoy the most are the classic point-and-click adventures, like the old Monkey Island 1 and 2, or the funny Day of Tentacle, or the Gabriel Knight saga, or the Leisure Suit Larry saga, or the Sam & Max, or the Police Quest saga.... Man!! those times will never come back.... well it does come back with something called Dosbox =)

Well back then the pool of ideas for great games was almost limitless where as nowadays more producers force devs to focus on graphics and milking franchises rather than being innovative.
The 90's started so many genre's or at least made them extremely popular like Goldeneye 007, Gran Turismo, just to name a few although nowadays most shooters have too many gimmicks and all the racing games handle like ur either driving on ice or a train on its tracks.
